[ peggy gestures smallishly with one hand, inviting ahsoka inside so she might grab a seat on the chest at the foot of peggy's bed. it's the best she could do for secondary seating. ] The Fleet's damn well crawling with others from...well, not home exactly.

[resnipstance]

[That earns Peggy a quizzical look.]

What do you mean?

[mucked]

[ she raises a finger and points it in (roughly) the direction of the engines. ] Tony Stark? Yes? [ the starstruck's engineer, at least. ] Same world. Except he won't be born for a good few decades. Same goes for Wanda, actually. Jim Barnes, now -- I did know him a few years back but...well, it gets complicated.

[ her smile is more of a grimace. ] There's quite a handful of individuals from what will be my world's future. And a growing number whose worlds share a lot in common with mine, but are ever so slightly different.

[resnipstance]

--Oh. That's a headache, yeah.

I didn't realise there were other people here whose timelines were equally as screwed up. It seems obvious, in retrospect...

A headache we share, then. [ gently, she sets down her pen. ]

Can I help you sort any of it out? Maybe I'll have a fresh perspective!

[Equal parts nosy and eager to help as always. Not that Peggy's to know that, really.]

-- I have a decent handle upon the decades of difference and progress and what-have-you. [ after all, she's said that had been a pre-existing sort of headache. ] What's a little more tricky is the fact that I've...hmm, there isn't a convenient sort of word to label the experience. But you've been in the fleet longer than I have, yes? So you likely know how sometimes, some people...remember things. Fresh things, from their homes.

[resnipstance]

Oh! I've heard of that, yes. Sort of like a... flash forward? Instead of a flash back.

Are you saying it happened to you?

[mucked]

Precisely so. I don't care to bore you with the details, Ahsoka. But things were heating up. Back home. And perhaps I can't solve the problem from here, but...

[ she pauses. composes herself. ] I have to try.

[resnipstance]

Ooh-- is it a mystery?

[mucked]

Partly. [ she admits. and the rest is -- what? foolhardiness. ] One with most of its pieces still missing, I'm afraid. And it seems that those many future-flung individuals can't furnish me with them.

[ she hasn't yet decided whether to take their ignorance as a good sign or a warning bell. ]

Huh. Well, what good are they, then!

[She says it jokingly, not meanly.]

[ her laughter is brittle. entertained, perhaps, but not cheered. but peggy knows better than to blame ahsoka for her misfortune and bad timing. ]

Not good for much. They have their own mysteries to settle, I take it. Seventy years is a long long time. It's possible no one can remember what was once life or death to me and my colleagues.

Oh man. No wonder.

There are some people here from only twenty years in my future, and they don't even know the major names involved with the war I'm currently fighting in! Galactic memory sure is short...

Individual memory -- [ dear lord, she nearly said human memory but soon caught herself up short ] -- is something of a mayfly. It persists in the present and merely vacations in the past when it sees fit to be entertained. I try not to take it to heart.

War, however. War tends to be one of those anthologies of stories that don't fade so easily. I'm surprised they don't remember those names. My career might be lost to the footnotes, but the recent war wasn't. Nor its generals. Its heroes.

I'm not in it for the heroics, but it's still pretty depressing. From what I understand, apparently there was a regime change and some extreme revisionist history.

-- Ah, well. That is a far more insidious beast than faded memories. Revisionists have particularly sharp blades. Redacted histories, rewritten stories...

[ she's done a bit of that herself, admittedly. ] I'm sorry. Said like that, it doesn't as though your side...won.
