[if there has been any discussion or collaboration concerning these gumball things, Coil certainly hasn't bothered to look for it before now. he has only been working on his own and with a precious few other people, locked away in his own little lab, until he has something really tangible to share. and when he does, it's just a crude, anonymous text message dumped out to the network at large, along with an uploaded attachment.]

Gum - isolated and manipulated - polymer unknown? synthetic? - regular pattern and structure - use and purpose unknown - not foodstuff important to atroma maybe? valuable? secret? dangerous? to other labs: find similar results? any further study?

[and that's pretty much it, because Coil may be competent with science, but typing is another matter entirely. even the attachment he posts, which is the entire collection of his notes so far, are only scanned, handwritten documents. not a single thing has been typed up, so some other patient soul would have to transcribe them if they want something a bit more digital. the notes include the documentation of his testing, the chemical results, and several useful sketches of bits of the 'completed' gumball polymer.

after the broadcast is sent out, he leaves the communicator nearby so he can watch for replies, and gets right back to work in the meantime. if anyone happens to stop by in person, he can be found either in his lab, or stopping briefly by the kitchen for a snack to keep him going. he's going to be at this for a while.]

[give him a minute. the texts stop, he goes quiet for a minute... but he's just dicking around with his communicator until he figures out how to use the filtering function. he's not great with technology and they don't often have a comms officer, okay.

eventually, their conversation is encrypted and he returns to the keys.]

Have you compared it at all to regular gum?

[ maybe a silly question, but- he hasn't actually fussed with the gumballs on his own ship at all. ]

regular gum doesnt contain complex unknown polymers

My colleague, Dr. Crusher, managed to scan the crates and found the traces of the polymer. But it wasn't anything that she recognised either.

[oh. that guy. he's at least relieved to see that some of the lab support sticks around in the Fleet for extended amounts of time.]

any clues as to its purpose?

Just guesses, really. Either a sort of preservative that we're not familiar with, or something more sinister than that.

That's why I was hoping to get a few gumballs to get a closer look.

I didn't find anything more than what it looks like you have, honestly. The lab didn't give much information and neither did magic or alchemy - they just seem like strange gumballs, though they're not dangerous as far as I can tell.

I still think that it must be some kind of test more than anything else.

[there's a pretty long pause before a reply comes through. he's giving this one some thought... and it takes him a minute to hunt-and-peck out a response.]

One of my shipmates tried to figure out the chemical makeup, and I tried using some magic to see if anything could be figured out from them. None of my spells really seemed to work, though.

and my work had shown that it all degrades except the polymer and it can be activated on a molecular level but i dont know why

Oh, I'm sure it'll change faster than I'd like.

I wonder if it has something to do with the material? I've never really looked at anything at a molecular level, but it would be interesting to have a bit more of a look.

We do, but I've only been here a little while and I haven't really had too much time to go ahead and use everything. I'm far too used to magic, even if my Augment is helping me with it all.

one of my crewmate tried to ues alchemy on it but it just showed up as regular gum

wht kind of tests did u run on them???

thats the polymer it doesn't degrade -isolated with heat and other destructive and oxidizing methods -activated with manipulation

and we don't know what kind of polymer it is? beyond it being possibly sythecti??

in that case it could be rubber, a type of resin, nylon and uh

silicone i think??

idk its been a while since i studied this but i know theres other stuff

or maybe somethig else entirely? what kind of manipulation did u use?

those are known and are affected by heat this is unknown manual manipulation changes the structure
