[When Erik arrived on the ship, with a jolt of surprise and much irritated brushing away of confetti, he wasn't been in much of a mood to socialise. For those who do catch him in this initial moment, they might find themselves with a plate of chocolate cream suddenly thrust at them, as he pinches the bridge of his nose with his other hand. It just had to be sweets, didn't it.]

[While he's been making sure to head out to the station often - there's the small matter of credits and information to gather - Erik applies himself to learning the ins-and-outs of the Heron. More particularly, the workings of the engine. The idea of being designated a job and having information about it forced into his mind is distasteful, if he's being generous. But as jobs go, he could have landed a worse one, considering his particular talents.

He's a practical man, so he learns by doing, spending a lot of time in the engine room. This does sometimes involves the proper tools, like wrenches and screwdrivers. More often, though, it involves him merely pointing at something and watching the screws unwind themselves, the panel floating up into the air so he can observe the inner workings. He isn't particularly concerned with being seen doing it. Indeed, once or twice he does it in the main hallway, removing a grate for a moment before replacing it.]

[When Pyrrha arrives, she mostly just looks startled for a short time, because while she had known that this was coming... well, she didn't expect it. Who expects this? How does one prepare?? But after taking some time to put the complimentary food down in the kitchen, she sets out to explore the ship.]

Hello!? I think I'm new to your ship, if there is anyone here at the moment!

[Once she's had a bit to settle down, though, she's making use of her augment well. She's in the kitchen, whipping up something that is probably actually pretty good even with the odd materials to work with!

Thank god for being a cook.]

Ren would be proud... I think. [She says to herself, before calling out and hoping people will hear her, or smell the food itself (which smells A+):] If you're hungry, I've prepared something!

[He's down in the engine room when Pyrrha comes exploring, screwing a bolt back into an engine panel. At the sound of approaching footsteps, he looks up.]

Hello again.

[Shinji isn't the most surreptitious when it comes to spying on someone. It's just, you know, when that someone seems to be deconstructing the ship with their mind, he's hesitant about approaching them right away. But he finally decides to speak up when he observes Erik messing with a grate out in the hallway.]

I don't think you're supposed to take apart the ship.

[Some distance away, Shinji is hugging the wall so closely that he might as well be clinging to it. Small, young, and wary-looking, he wonders if this is a new crew member or one of those hostiles that Vima mentioned. Maybe they're being invaded...?!]

[Erik pauses when Shinji speaks, looking over at where the boy is huddling. It's true he'd expected someone to comment on what he was doing, eventually, but he hadn't given much thought to the kind of person who would.

He takes the grate in hand and replaces it physically. It might be a more reassuring gesture.]

I don't think so either. Thankfully, this grate isn't that important. It's only covering some pipes.

I. (Backdated to first of the month.)

[Nomi really hadn't spent a lot of time outside of the quarters she'd taken to sharing with Vima, preferring mostly to keep to herself for a time while she adjusted. Life in space was not unfamiliar, but the environment here was not the same as at home and it took her time to adjust.

Today, though, she's finally really stepping out and attempting to stop being that one person who doesn't talk to anybody. Starting with an exploration of the ship. She'll wander from area to area, basically waving at anyone who happens to be around and offering a warm, matronly smile.]

Hello there. Forgive me, I don't think we've met. I'm Nomi.

[Nomi is no cook. Not even close to it, but thankfully for you she's not cooking for anyone else. Good thing too, since she's just poking at the food dispensing machine and blinking.]

Pumpkin-spice? What is that even supposed to mean?

[Vima is nervous about this meeting--one that's been in the pipeline since her mother appeared on the Marsiva. That is to say, the "calibration rooms" that they were subjected to months ago. During which a) she barged into a memory of Dr. Crusher's and b) Dr. Crusher saw Vima's decision to go to Ulic Qel-Droma the ex-Jedi for training.

The latter of which Vima has not brought up yet. She's kind of waiting to see if Nomi has questions herself, but also... she's worried about potential timeline implications. Which is another good reason to have Dr. Crusher around, because apparently she knows about timeline nonsense.

In the meantime, she'll start making tea and glances over when her mom questions the flavors on offering.]

Uh... I think it's an Earth thing? I was kind of confused to see spice everywhere at first, but it's not like mined spice.

Hello. I hope I'm not interrupting anything...? I didn't think we'd become crewmates at all.

[The resident cook of the Heron has now arrived to help.]

It's a flavor... pumpkin, nutmeg, things like that.

[More new arrivals. It's a bittersweet thing to see replacements for people--and it's stressful, too. Shinji isn't at ease around a stranger, so he spends a while kind of spying on Pyrrha, trying to divine if she's a good person or not. The smell of food is too delicious to resist, though.]

[He's soft-spoken and indecisive, lurking in the kitchen's doorway.]

It smells good...

Where does the spice come in? That's not something that should be consumed at all, let alone be used as common flavoring.

[That word has a vastly different definition at home...]

[More reassuring, yes. But still incredibly suspicious. But now that Shinji is really thinking about it, he realizes this guy is kind of familiar. Maybe he saw Erik on the network or something. He's often reading new posts in an effort to find patterns in the Fleet's membership.]

As long as you put it back together, I guess it's okay. I just... don't want things to explode all of a sudden. That would be bad.

The spice is the nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves... all of that sort of thing are common flavorings. Why shouldn't it be consumed?

[What do you mean, none of this stuff is bad!! She's just confused, now, but is chalking it up to misunderstandings of... some kind.]

Something simple. I tried to make something as close to a curry as I could, since we have the curry flavoring... but I'm not sure how well I managed. It's a bit odd compared to what I've done before, but I think I managed.

[Her voice is warm, and she seems fairly cheerful—though she seems a bit distracted too, mostly by kitchen things because she wants to make everything as good as she can.]

Would you like some? There's enough for everyone.

[He dusts his hands off and considers Shinji's comment. Of course, it might look like that from an outside perspective. Explosions seemed a bit extreme, however.]

I won't cause any explosions. On that subject, we can agree. That would end badly for all of us.

It seems to happen entirely at random, from what I can tell.

[He shakes his head, throwing the wrench aside into the toolbox.]

You're not. I'm still getting my bearings here myself.

[Erik is in the kitchen area when Nomi comes to call, looking slightly disgruntled at the wheat solid he was poking with a fork. He glances up when she speaks, turning to look in her direction.]

No, we haven't. But this is only my first day here, so I haven't met much of anyone.

Blade. It's nice to meet you.

[He extends a hand to shake.]

[Hand accepted! Nomi smiles wryly and takes a seat across from him then.]

You're doing better than I. I've been here two weeks and only really spoken to my daughter.

Spice shouldn't be put into food. It's a hallucinogen. And an addictive narcotic.

[None of those flavorings ring a bell...]

[So that's the misunderstanding...]

That's not what these are. Spice is a term for all kinds of flavorings we can use to make food taste better... none of them are addictive narcotics.

Again, probably for the drama that it wold create.

It's not so bad, though. It's like being part of a team again, in a way.

Oh. OH! So...alright. That makes a lot more sense.

[Eyes widening, she laughs lightly, at herself more than anything.]

I was very, very confused. Thank you for clearing that up.

[Oh snap. Someone else who knows what curry is. Shinji had to explain curry to a different member of the crew not that long ago. It's one of his favorite foods of all time. Still, he's hesitant when stepping into the kitchen and approaching the counter.]

If you made a decent curry out of this slop, you're a miracle worker. I'm serious. My last attempt didn't go so well...

[He retrieves some bowls for everyone to make use of.]

I'd like to give it a try. Thank you very much.

[Needless to say, Shinji is always expecting the worst. There's still a chance that Erik's head will pop off and reveal a screaming alien head. With creepy tentacles. And acidic secretions that burn through the floor. Yeah.]

That's a relief. I'm a light sleeper, so an explosion would ruin my night.

[His sense of humor, if it can be called that, is dry and vaguely sarcastic.]

I don't think we have met. I'm one of the pilots around here... Shinji Ikari. You're a new arrival, sir?

[Beverly comes in a few minutes later. Unlike Vima, she is completely at ease - no calibration talk will compare to what she went through with Tek. No one here is a deeply paranoid death dragon. Even if things don't exactly go swimmingly, she's confident they can work through any issues that come up in a sensible manner.]

Good morning! [Beaming at the both of them, she spies the pumpkin spice drink dispenser Nomi is poking at.] Oh, I didn't know some ships had that flavor!
