[ Unfortunately, there is no real "off" button for telepathy. At the most, he can restrain it well enough so he doesn't pick up anyone's wayward thoughts, but he's unable to stop sensing them nearby. Especially if it was a stranger. Other minds that he was familiar with didn't pose that kind of alertness.

He rouses himself carefully, picking up the book once more. The girl seemed to be in her own little world, and Charles shouldn't disturb her. ]

[she's comfortable, and it would be like her to get fully immersed in her reading, but she'd only just started...and she's too aware of her surroundings not to notice the slight sounds of stirring as he straightens and picks up his book.
