[ In her video transmission, Kara has her blonde hair up in a messy topknot, wearing standard-issue clothes. She pushes her glasses up the bridge of her nose and looks a little sheepish ]

Um. Hi! Sorry to send this to everyone... Well, I had a question I wanted to pose to everyone but then another thing came up and...

Does anyone know how to reattach a door to a washing machine? I had a little mishap... and I still have a lot of laundry to get done. Anyway, it'd be awful if I didn't at least ask how to put it back the way it was.

The second thing is completely unrelated. Does anyone else feel really weird about wanting friends or family to show up? I don't think I'd wish this experience on anyone against their will, but as long as we're going to be here... it'd be nice to have familiar faces, don't you think? How do you deal with the conflict?

And is there any way to request they bring crullers with them?

Well, yeah, I guess context matters.

It's been hard trying to figure out what I should or shouldn't say about all of this.

If you ask me? [ and she knows you didn't. not really. ] Here, there seems to be a lot of us.

[ heroes -- powered and unpowered. incredible people. ] If you can't be yourself here, then I don't know what to tell you.

Isn't that the hard part, though? For the first 12 years of my life, I was one thing, and the last 12, I've had to be something else. Kind of makes it hard to choose.

Who says you have to choose? [ ... ] Take your best bits from both lives and be those.

What was your journey like?

You mean -- how I got into the gig?

Well, yeah. The superheroing.

It's not as exciting a story as you might think. [ but she's willing to tell it -- at least, the part about her actually joining the young avengers. the reasons behind her hand-to-hand skill are otherwise deeply personal, and something she doesn't share much with anyone. ] A bunch of lowlife thugs took hostages at my sister's wedding. And the trio of ill-prepared kids calling themselves the Young Avengers who showed up to rescue us ended up needing rescuing themselves.

[ and then she tracked them down in the aftermath and made them let her on the team. at least, this is kate's version of events. ]

And you, in a bridesmaids dress? That's pretty impressive.

There might have been a little on-the-spot tailoring. Just goes to show you the futility of paying top dollar for a dress I'm only going to wear once.

That's pretty impressive, though. You were able to really help out before you were on the team? And you're sure you don't have any super powers.

Positive. Unless you count an acerbic wit and an inability to take no for an answer as superpowers. [ ...which, sometimes the guys classified it as such. ] Otherwise, it's all about having really good aim. With or without the arrows.

What about you? Is it just the strength, or...?

Arrows? Like Robin Hood?

Ah, well... I'm trying to figure out how to shorten the list without leaving things out... There are a few. Strength, invulnerability—including things like being bulletproof and not really getting sick ever—flight, speed... heat vision, really really cold breath...

[ it sounds ridiculous to her too when she has to list it out ]

[ she nods -- like robin hood, sorta. but rather than get caught up in the comparison, she lets the conversation flow naturally back upon kara and her curious abilities. to kate, it kinda sounds like a mash of all sorts of heroes. plenty have the strength, lots have invulnerability. flight, speed...the heat vision and cold breath were interesting, though. a little narrower.

she perks up: ] And you said something about the, uhm, yellow sun?

That's where my powers come from.

[ she adjusts her glasses ]

Krypton had a red sun, and we were all really normal there. But when I was sent to Earth, the yellow sun has different properties? So I got all these powers. The last few places we docked were pretty much nil on the sun, but there's one here, at least. It's just kind of far away and weak from all the pollution on the moon.

I'm kind of like a solar panel, I guess?

That's...actually fascinating. [ a beat. ] Sorry, is it rude to say that? Only it's really interesting that those powers depend on where you are.

[ interesting, but probably inconvenient. ] You're alright though, aren't you? If you don't see the sun.

[ you're not like a plant are you? please don't wither away kara. ]

Like I said, we were just normal on Krypton. Besides an unusually weak handshake and the common cold, I'm pretty okay without powers.

[ for the most part. she doesn't like feeling vulnerable in that way, and it's been really frustrating being kidnapped somewhere and not having full access to her powers ]

[ it would take kate more time and thought than she expends just now in order to truly empathize with such a frustration. after all, she sees nothing wrong with normality. but in time, she'd liken it to losing her bow fingers. or maybe her vision. that, she could understand mourning.

anyway: ] So? How'd you start? You mentioned twelve years and twelve years. Have you been Supergirl for a little over a decade?

[ because that's intense and you look pretty youthful, missy. kate might have started on a team with really young people, but still! ]

Um, no. More like a few months.

[ she thinks for a moment how to explain her situation, and decides to go for the mid-to-long explanation ]

When I was 12, and my planet was dying, my aunt and uncle decided to send their son to another planet, in hopes of survival. My parents sent me along after him to protect him.

Which would've been a better plan if I didn't get stuck in the Phantom Zone for 20 years. It's like space-stasis? So I didn't age, but Kal-El, who didn't get stuck and landed on Earth normally, did.

So I get free after 20 years, he's already in his early 20s and Superman, I'm 12. He helped find me a foster family—who's great, by the way—and the goal at that point was to give me as normal a life as possible.

I thought that's what I wanted, but a few months ago, my sister was on a plane that got hijacked. Knowing I could do something about it, I had to go help, so I did! And that kind of started the whole thing.

[ kate listens with rapt attention. and patience. she lets kara talk her way though the story, and it's fascinating because it sounds exactly like the kind of think she ought to know. but's it's fresh. like a new story.

come the end, kate offers only a mildly affectionate: ] Sisters, am I right?

[ because their origins at least have that in common. ]

Trouble magnets.

[ but on a more heartfelt note: ] Some people just can't stand by and the world needs every one of them. No matter where you come from, Kara.
