It's Star Trek and that isn't exactly - you know, the same thing as this.

Right. . . . Wait, I think I see something on the side.

[ And the video flickers on, the red light glowing softly. It focuses on two men. One in a wheelchair and the other right next to him, peering curiously at the camera before they step back satisfied. ]

Well, that’s over and done with. Hello to anyone who might be out there. My name is Charles Xavier and this is Hank McCoy. Apparently we’ve been kidnapped again, by an unknown force again for some mysterious reason.

[muttered:] Again. [and louder] So if anyone would be kind enough to explain exactly what's going on, we'd appreciate it. You have our thanks in advance.

[Now why would he bring that up, unless Rogue and Kurt were his students as well? Even then, that question was a bit too personal, nor was it a question she was prepared to answer. Not to a stranger, not even to her children. She didn't expect them to understand, didn't ask them to, just hoped they could lead as normal a life as they could around the events that would later effect their lives.]

Why don't you leave that up to Rogue and Kurt instead of meddling in the middle of it? [Rogue had already made her feelings clear on where she stood. Even Xavier, no matter what whatever form he was in, couldn't change her mind. The end of the world couldn't change her mind, the girl was stubborn. Almost as stubborn as Mystique.]

[ Who is Rogue and Kurt?? But he doesn't dwell on it. ]

Isn't it also left to you?

[Mystique raised a brow over the video feed at Charles, any hint of earlier humor gone from her expression and instead replaced with a look of mild annoyance.] Don't try and get inside my head, Xavier, it won't work. [Both through words of his powers. She was protected from unwanted attention now, the only benefit from Erik's betrayal, that her mutation was taken to a phase she didn't realize existed.]

I can't get into your head.

[ He wouldn't. It was his one promise, a broken one at that, but he doesn't want to go there. He doesn't want to see. ]

I'm trying to have a conversation.

Of something that doesn't concern you. [Plain and simple, no room for discussion there.]

You have an interesting definition of concern. My concern is for mutantkind and it always will be, no matter how they might see me as.

And I don't play favourites.

[ Well. He doesn't know enough to do that, considering the school hasn't started yet. But even then, he's learned not to limit himself. ]

If you knew the real threats mutantkind was facing you wouldn't waste your time with petty squabbles between yourself and Erik and be preparing your students for the real dangers to come.

[She felt herself snap, that built up anger towards others in her world being so blind and ignorant to what the future holds, but also knowing such knowledge would be wasted on them. Yet the anger lasted only a moment, long enough to bark and show it's ugly head, to show the real, furious woman under it all, before she forced herself calm. Face returning to neutral, voice leveling out. No, it was pointless. It wasn't Xavier's path, he had his role to play, he and all his students, and it was no the same as her's.]

[ Ah. That clears up some things. ]

Erik and I don't have any squabbles. A future with the Sentinels no longer exists. I do not know what dangers you speak of, but the real dangers should be faced by the adults.

And the students should be protected.

[ A little softer. ] What did you see, Mystique?

Delay isn't the same thing as stopping. [She knew that all too well, something that looked like it had been stopped only to show back up five or ten years later.

His question however went ignored, barely registered with little more than a slight narrowing of her eyes, her face otherwise a forced stillness.]

Perhaps if you elucidated on what we are meant to be stopping, it could be stopped. Why do it on your own?

Because you have your role to play, Charles. Your piece has already been set in motion, you are needed else where, as is Erik, unfortunately. [The name was growled out, face tense for a moment as she said it, as if it left a bad taste in her mouth.] Mutants need figureheads and ideals to follow, or they will scatter and that will prove even more disastrous to us all.

And it's easier to work from the shadows than in the light, the enemy doesn't see you coming that way.

Erik and I stopped playing pawns to other powers a long time ago.

[ And that kind of logic is confusing. ]

But you can't coordinate with allies either. How much do you expect to accomplish?

More than you can clearly imagine. [After all, she's being doing this for a long time now, more than her appearance let on.]

And I don't need allies when I have tools. [It wasn't a nice way to refer to others, but it was very true to her manner of using them.]

[ It really hits him then - that this is Mystique and not his Raven in any way. This is what she could have been, in the future. On her own, disillusioned.

It was a depressing thought. And he's never been so relieved that she chose otherwise. ]

You may think you're paving the way. But it's just as likely you're as destructive to the future you want. For all Erik and I did . . . we didn't destroy hope for mutant kind.

[ He doesn't need to say who did. ]

[There was really no way to make him believe, to show him how wrong he was, without revealing Destiny. And Mystique was not ready to do that. There would come a time in his world when she showed herself, if it was suppose to happen.

If his Mystique was lucky. It really would change her life.

Yet it also came down to the fact that Mystique really didn't care about proving anything to Xavier. It didn't affect her at all, so she instantly dismissed his words.] So you say. As always, your sphere of what the world needs only extends to what you can immediately see.

You've said many things too, but little proof beyond yourself. So you can say your sphere is no different than mine.

The difference is, I'm not trying to prove myself to others, I don't need to. It makes no difference to me if you believe it or not, because it doesn't change anything. I know what is true, I've seen the proof a hundred times over and more, and that's more than enough for my 'sphere'.

[ He considers this, before realizing it is a moot point. Foreknowledge was not worth the price of being alone. That much, he knew. And while he has reaped the benefits of it, he knows that the high ground pays little in return. ]

Then I hope your sphere of one pays off, Mystique.

It will. [No note of doubt in her voice at all in regards to this.]

Enjoy your slavery here Charles, just like the rest of us. [Yet Mystique didn't give him a chance to reply, finishing so she had the last word as her com went dead to his connection.]
