It's Star Trek and that isn't exactly - you know, the same thing as this.

Right. . . . Wait, I think I see something on the side.

[ And the video flickers on, the red light glowing softly. It focuses on two men. One in a wheelchair and the other right next to him, peering curiously at the camera before they step back satisfied. ]

Well, that’s over and done with. Hello to anyone who might be out there. My name is Charles Xavier and this is Hank McCoy. Apparently we’ve been kidnapped again, by an unknown force again for some mysterious reason.

[muttered:] Again. [and louder] So if anyone would be kind enough to explain exactly what's going on, we'd appreciate it. You have our thanks in advance.

If nothing else talks, the money does, huh? But everything I've seen other people experience means no time passes back home- people from the same world have come from different points on their timeline, for example, but never knew anybody was gone.

That's . . . extremely convenient. Though I suppose I'm . . . somewhat used to that.

[he was none the wiser to Charles and Erik disappearing from Cuba, after all]

It is, isn't it? I guess it might be one of those deals where it irreparably screws things up for the worse in our home universes if a bunch of us were to suddenly up and disappear. The butterfly effect and all.

[suspiciously calmly] That is very, very likely. It's a significant enough event to change how things were - uh, meant to go, anyway.

I have some firsthand experience with that- one person being there or gone can make all the difference, yes. Some outcomes are the same, but happen in very different circumstances, and some possibilites vanish entirely. So maybe Atroma's at least kind enough to try to prevent that.

[oh my god someone who gets it]

I really hope they are. That would put one big worry out of my head if that was the case.

Me, too. I'd like to think that me being absent wouldn't be a big deal, but then I think about my boyfriend and my dad and my friends... how irreparably it would change their lives. And it might well ripple out from there.

The butterfly effect. [he nods, understanding] I can't help but think that way, too.

Yeah... so that's what I hold onto. The idea that nothing bad will have happened as a result of my being gone.

It's a good thing to hold on to. You're not the only one.

[a pause, and then he looks sheepish] I'm sorry - we're having this - really important conversation and I haven't even asked your name.

[She smiled in return.]

I'm Jennifer, or Dr. Keller inside the clinic- I'm the medical officer on the Wonderduck.

Circumstances aside it's a pleasure, Dr. Keller. Or - Jennifer, if you prefer that.

Jennifer's fine. And it certainly is. I know the lack of answers can be frustrating, but I try to share what little I have.

It's appreciated. That you even put the effort forward at all is appreciated, honestly.

You're welcome. Everyone was kind to me when I first arrived here, so I want to pay it forward and make sure we're equipped to live here- since goodness knows Atroma doesn't help much.

So I've heard. But - that's a great way to think about it. I'll make sure I do the same.

Everyone does seem very kind, though. It's - honestly a relief.

I think we figure we're all in the same boat and have the same goal of getting out of here and going home, so the more we help each other, the better.

That makes sense. It's good to know that everyone's pretty much on the same page regarding that.
