[By and large, Katie hates this moon.   It made her sick when she first got here and she's largely shunned it ever since.  Today marks the first day she's voluntarily gone out in it.  Why? 

Because she has a lightsaber.  And she wants to practice with it and swing it around and generally have fun with it and maybe cut down a few sickly dead branches.  And while she could do this in the cargo bay of the Vanquish easy enough, out here she has to wear a mask.

A mask and a lightsaber is just too much to pass up, oh my god.  She's found a black one, which in fact looks nothing like anything you might find in Star Wars, which is probably for the best all round, really.  But it's black, and it's the best she can do, and if you head into the gloom of the smog this fine day you might find a small child waving a pale white lightsaber around that makes all the appropriate lightsaber sounds and doing her best to make breathing sounds like Darth Vader because black mask, and to be honest if she's not quoting some part of some lightsaber battle when you wander past it'll be kind of surprising.

...unless you are of course recognisable as a Jedi and thus she'll choke on her breath pretty quickly and turn the saber off and look as innocent as she possibly can.

On the bright side, it's clear to anyone with any powers of observation she actually knows how to use a sword and is taking care not to cause any accidental damage with it.  So... bonus?  It's just a small child having fun.  Vmm vmm.]

Do you ever find things that all that teaching doesn't help you with?

[It might sound bratty, but she's genuinely curious. That sounds like a lot of pressure.]

Of course.

[ He folds his arms. ] There will always be moments, experiences when what you know might fail you. But the important thing is to be true to yourself.

[flickerflash]

Oh. [She smiles at that. Be true to yourself is something she very much believes in.]

How long does it take to learn all the other things?

[beardstrokes]

Quite some time. I would say I've never really stopped learning at all.

[flickerflash]

So what sort of thing do you teach a new student first?

[beardstrokes]

I'm not entirely sure. I've never taken on completely new students before.

[ And really, his only student had been Anakin. Yes, he had helped Ahsoka out as well, but Obi-Wan wasn't comfortable in calling himself Ahsoka's teacher. ]

[She remembers that from the movie actually, so--]

Didn't you teach Anakin?

[My Star Wars-fu is only up to 1989.]

[ Obi-Wan blinks, marginally surprised. But then he remembers that she possesses some knowledge of his galaxy. ]

I did. Though I believe Anakin is the exception.

He's very loyal.

[Up until the point he won't be, anyway.]

[beardstrokes]

[ Er. ]

Yes? I've never had doubts about Anakin's loyalty.

[flickerflash]

Oh, I didn't expect you to. I just thought it was nice. Did you know we'd met?

[That might clarify some confusion, anyway.]

[ Bemused. ]

No, I did not. What was it like?

He was much grumpier than I expected. [She grins a little.] For a Jedi, anyway.

[beardstrokes]

Well. He's a rather special Jedi.

[flickerflash]

What makes him special?

[beardstrokes]

You didn't know? He's considered to be the Chosen One. Meant to bring balance to the Force.

[flickerflash]

[By the look on her face, she most definitely didn't know. But that's the second time he's mentioned balance--]

What does that mean? Why is the Force out of balance?

[beardstrokes]

We are currently fighting a war.

[ He runs his hand through his beard. ]

As such, there have been many negative feelings . . . energies in the Force of late.

[flickerflash]

You mean like the dark side? Or something else?

[She looks puzzled.]

[beardstrokes]

[ Obi-Wan hesitates. He's not sure how much he should say. ]

Like the Dark Side. We know they've been pushing this war to its limits and because of it, the Force is no longer in balance. There is no longer an equal amount of Light and Dark.

[flickerflash]

Does that mean for every Jedi there's a D-- [AHH-- what were they called--] Sith? Sith Lord? That sounds a little scary.

[beardstrokes]

No. There are only ever two Sith Lords at a time. Never more.

[ And whenever that happens, even then the Balance rights itself. Maul must be dead by now.

. . . He hopes. ]

[flickerflash]

[...squint.]

Are Sith Lords very powerful? More powerful than Jedi?

[beardstrokes]

No. They simply prefer to work alone for the most part and use other people to get what they want.

[flickerflash]

That doesn't sound very balanced, then.

[She's legitimately puzzled. If there are only two Sith and dozens of Jedi, how does that even out?] I suppose if they cause more than enough trouble for all of you, it works out.
