We call him Morgoth, the Dark Foe of the World, and his true name we no longer speak. [ There is a lilting sing song quality to his voice, the echo of a storyteller. But hate boils beneath the calm of the ice - old and strong, carefully stoked and nurtured over centuries, honed into a weapon as sharp as any blade. ]

He is one of the Powers of the World - or was. But he wished for what he could not have, and fell in pride to hate, for what he could not have he would not share, and vowed to destroy, instead. He could not create, so instead he twisted and corrupted. He could no longer make, so instead he destroyed. He spread lie and rumor, and fanned the flames of distrust, wherever he could find it. He killed my grandfather, and by so doing, started a whole people - my people, down a terrible road.

[beardstrokes]

[ Dark Foe, Sith Lords . . . not very different then. Obi-Wan runs a hand through his beard. ]

I see. I've known many people like that.

[bythewaves]

Far too many. [ he says grimly ]

But he was the first, and the corruptor of those who followed after. He is banished, now, and the Doors of Night are guarded. But his malice remains, bound into the very substance of the world itself. They say there is no way to remove it, unless the world itself be broken and remade.

[beardstrokes]

[ Obi-Wan murmurs to himself. ]

So his feelings have integrated themselves in the Force. . . ?

[ Maglor blinks, curious ]

What is the Force?

[beardstrokes]

Pardon my manners. The Force is what the Jedi believe in. It is an energy field that surrounds and supports life and fate. It is always in motion and with it, so are we.

The Jedi fight for the Light and the Sith fight for the Dark.

[bythewaves]

[ Maglor hums softly in acknowledgement ] Ah, I see - almost like an interpretation of the Song. I wonder how similar it is in truth.

And you are a Jedi then, I must assume?

[beardstrokes]

I am a Jedi Master.

[ Which still sounds odd to say - especially in light of all that he knows, but considering he took the position, it seems right to acknowledge it. ]

I've fought many iterations of the Dark.

[bythewaves]

[ Maglor tips his head in acknowledgement and curiosity both ]

That is good to hear, although it is a sorry tale that every world holds, it seems. But I am glad to meet another who has stood fast against the tide.

[beardstrokes]

I will always stand against the Dark.

[ And the Dark has tried its hardest to destroy him - turn him, torture him, take away from him the people that he has loved. Obi-Wan hasn't changed in his stance. ]

[bythewaves]

Good. [ He murmurs softly ]

May your light never fail, and your hope never fade. I know too well how easy it is to falter.

[beardstrokes]

[ Though a little wry. ] Though I've never had that problem.

[bythewaves]

Fortunate you are then! And fortunate too, your people, to have such a champion.

You spoke of the Sith? What are they like?

[beardstrokes]

[ His expression hardens a little. ]

Their goal is to spread chaos and disorder. They tend to be angry, violent and vengeful. They care little of other people, so long as they hold the power.

[bythewaves]

An organisation then. [ He hums softly ]

They sound like orcs. [ His eyes glint a little, something a little bloodthirsty in their depths ] Only worse, and I never thought to see that. May you have success.

[beardstrokes]

No. There are only two. Always two.

[ Even when variations arise, the Sith kill each other off. ]

[bythewaves]

Only two? [ Maglor tips his head at him curiously ]

But they propogate, or they would not have opposed you for as long as they have, surely. Unless they are Powers of the like of Morgoth and Sauron?

[beardstrokes]

They are the inverse of the Jedi. So our powers are often similar.

[bythewaves]

Mortal then. Although I must wonder if there are secretly more than two, for them to persist so. So are there only two of you, as well?

[beardstrokes]

No, there are far more Jedi than there are Sith. The Jedi are stronger as a group, a community. The Sith, however, are vast different and cannot share power.

[bythewaves]

[ Maglor nods thoughtfully ]

Less cannot and more will not, it seems to me. Somehow, I amnot surprised. Evil is often jealous of its power. But to hear that there are many to oppose the Shadow is comforting, even if it is not my world at stake.

[beardstrokes]

There always will be.

So your people fight these Dark Powers?

[bythewaves]

[ The smile has too many teeth to be called pleasant ]

He killed my grandfather. [ Maglor says simply ] I may hate myself, for all my choices, but I never forget whose fault it is, that my father went mad and that I began on this road. Nine thousand years of the sun and more I have walked and grieved my choices, but never that one, that I have killed His servants wheresoe'er I can find them.

[beardstrokes]

[ Obi-Wan isn't taken aback. He's seen this kind of anger before, felt it for himself. He simply doesn't agree with it. ]

A long life indeed. I'm sorry.

[bythewaves]

[ Maglor shrugs, tiredly ]

It is as it is. I thank you for your compassion, but truly, many of my problems are my own fault.
