Good afternoon, everyone. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Padme and I've recently been promoted to first mate of the Heron. If you have any concerns or suggestions for the operation of the Heron, my door is always open. I'm also available as a counselor-- or just someone to talk to.

[ If anyone happens to be looking for her, Padme will be in her office most of the day, usually scribbling notes or reading. But her door is open. ]

The variety? Granted, I've only been to this moon so far. But I am a scientist by nature and seeing how other planets develop is fascinating to me.

What sort of science to you specialize in?

Genetics, mostly. Though I do have experience in the other fields as well.

History, biology, physics. I dabble here and there. I was meant to be a teacher, after all. Most of it is terribly out of date for the future. Or space travel.

Of course. There's no shortage of books here either. And I catch up very fast.

I started going stir-crazy after a week. I'm not used to traveling this slowly or being on a ship for such long periods of time.

Very. Usually, I could travel between worlds in as little as a few minutes. At most, a trip might take a few days. At the pace the Fleet moves, it's like comparing a starship to a broken-down shuttle.

Then I imagine the ships can go faster but choose not to. Probably in part to see how we adapt to new locations and keep the content fresh.

I never would have considered that. It's hard enough to tell what the ships can really do. Only pilots have a hope at flying the ships. I have experience piloting a ship and even I couldn't do it.

Still, it's odd for us to linger on planets for so long. And going with the premise, I would assume that's what they get out of it. New experiences for the viewers to tap into.

The viewers don't seem to get bored easily. We travel in space for a week or so at a time. And our stops have been rather tame.

[ Then again, her definition of "tame" might not match everyone else's. ]

If I knew more about reality television, I could probably confirm it, but it doesn't exist in my time.

I don't know of anything like 'reality tv' either, but I'm not sure if the Holonet is exactly like television.

The Holonet? What would that be?

A galaxy-wide network that broadcasts programming to holographic receivers. The broadcasts aren't always live, and can be anything from live broadcasts of senate meetings to [ a slight twitch of a smile ] Jedi holos.

[ Charles has something like that, though it's all mental. He's surprised to hear how large it can be. ]

You don't have long-range communications where you're from?

No, not really. Beyond mail and phone lines, we have nothing that connects us instantly.

Lines? You have to be tethered to something to communicate?

They are special wires that carry electronic signals and is translated to sound. Which sounds rather low tech, I imagine.
