[If anyone ever had a doubt that Tyrion Lannister likes to keep himself occupied, today would be the day that he put all doubts to rest. His fingers flick against the side of his camera as he is reaching for a book. Which is good, because he's got three open now. He frowns at one paragraph, then pushes off with his chair - with wheels, fascinating things these.

Then he was picking up a screwdriver, turning to a tank that looked a great deal like the displays at the Green Museum, twisting a brace into place, eying it, then rolling back across the floor to check on the panels for the engine. He picked up a clipboard, put down the screwdriver and exchanged it for pencil while he marked off a few things on a list, then pushed himself off to roll back to his desk, where he flipped a page on his second book, muttering quietly to himself.]

'This means that the center of mass of the arrow–where gravity acts–is further forward than the center of pressure–where aerodynamic forces act. This results in the aerodynamic forces helping to stabilize the flight of the arrow.'

[He tapped the page, then pushed off again to his work-table, where a variety of weapons were lying on the surface, and plucked up the bow.] Yes, all right, that means I just need to change the density of the string and curve the bow a little more for the right amount of pressure per inch... good, good.

[He hummed as he put the bow back down, and reached underneath for his toolbox, singing softly to himself as he went through the varying strings he had gathered for said bow.]

[Clearly, Tyrion is something of a workaholic, when he gets himself going.]

[ speaks the stranger. it's not the best bow she's ever seen, but nor is it the worst. ]

Do you truly think so? I have been trying to get the curvature right, but I fear I do not have the right wood to work with.

[He sighed as he looked over at the bow.] I suppose I shall have to keep perfecting it until it is right.

Yeah. If you got your supplies on the moon below, the wood would probably be crap.

I did not get it from the moon below - but I did get it at the last planet we visited. Clearly I am going to have to pay more attention to wooden products I purchase. [He eyed it carefully.]

Bows are tricky. Your ideal wood is always gonna depend on the bow's specifications. Its poundage. Its usage.

Well, it is a weapon for a friend. I am guessing she wants to put an arrow through a man's skull easily enough.

[ grisly. kate doesn't kill; she seems to be a bit offended by the tone, but lets it slide. ]

Yeah, sure, great. But that's not really what I meant. There's more variety in a bow than your layman gives it credit for. Everything down to a wood's springy nature boils down to personal preference. Some swear by yew. Me? I like osage.

[Honestly, what is everyone's qualm with weapons that kill? If you have a weapon that kills someone, they will not kill you so quickly. Forgive him, Kate, but his world is altogether too brutal.]

She did not give me a wood type to work with ... but she stated she preferred accuracy over polish. What would you recommend for a more accurate shot?

[And yes, he has a notebook out in front of him, so he can jot down whatever you say, Kate.]

Honestly? I'd go with the osage -- if you can find it. Yew might shoot better under perfect conditions, but we hop around so much. You can't ever be certain what kind of port or planet we're going to stop at next. Climate can really futz a yew bow up. Your friend might prioritize accuracy, but the most accurate wood isn't always going to be the best wood at all times.

Does that make sense?

That makes a great deal of sense, honestly. [He slips his fingers along the bow, his gaze becoming more pensive.] What would you think of metal instead of wood? Would that be more durable?

Aluminum is absolutely more durable. And less subject to change in varying weather. But it just doesn't feel as good as a wooden bow -- at least not to me. I can't speak for your friend.

I will have to talk to her about that - perhaps some sort of combination of bows.

Sorry I can't be more help. Archers are...particular people.

You have actually been a great help - I am in your debt. I needed an archer's viewpoint to begin with.
