[ The video starts with Charles sitting on his wheelchair, his hands neatly folded on his lap. He rubs faint circles on his legs for a few seconds, the only real sign of tension. ]

Hello. My names is Charles Xavier. I am a geneticist graduated from Oxford. I -- [ ran ] -- run a school in Westchester for the Gifted. Mutants. People with abilities. My focus is the training and control of abilities we do not always fully understand, abilities that are gifts but can often run amok.

[ He pauses, catching his second wind before continuing on, poised. ]

I am also a telepath with a full set of abilities in aiding the mind and extremely . . . proficient. I do not read minds without permission, because honestly, I really don't care.

[ Charles pauses again, wondering if he should say more and dismisses it. People can ask him if they need details - which they will. ]

If anyone would like to make use of my abilities and skills, they are certainly most welcome to. Confidentiality, of course, is key and you need not make anything public if you do not wish to. If you have any questions for me, the floor is open for you.

Anyway. I don't know what it's like to be a telepath, but have enough people in enclosed spaces with some heightened senses and it's a mess.

It certainly is. There's nothing that can be done to limit that? The lighting in the room, perhaps?

No. Earplugs and not concentrating on it, mostly. I'm lucky that my hearing isn't as good as it could be right now, but I have learned how to control it to a point.

Impressive, being able to do that. Especially since it's connected to a physical sense.

I get a lot of songs stuck in my head for the distraction.

From the radio?

From wherever. The radio, TV themes, various albums...

[ He nods. ]

I'm always used to a little noise in my head. Nothing is ever . . . quiet.

I imagine not.

My friend with telepathy at home can't read my mind. Can you?

[ He looks at her carefully, gauging how sincere she is before nodding. Then, like water, he slips closer. No strong surface thoughts, which means her mind is partially shielded. Most likely an aspect of her physiology.

He pushes a little further, a little psychic nudge and the mind opens up, albeit slowly. Satisfied, he returns. ]

I could, though it would take more effort on my part than usual.

Well, I won't ask you to, then. Not that I'm sure I'd really want you to in the first place. I've had my share of brain meddling.

[ Charles' smile doesn't waver. ]

I can't picture a scenario. Can you?

[ Steadily. ]

I can. There have been many times when people have needed it. Whether it's to ease a traumatic memory so they can sleep at night or to recover a memory of a loved one.

I can see that for others, but I think I'm good.

I appreciate that you offer it as a service, though. How are you with phobias?

Depends on the phobia. There's no reason why it should pose any trouble.

Well, I won't volunteer anyone, but it's good to know.

[ Hm. He has a guess as to who it might be, but there's no reason to bring it up. ]

And, you know, if you ever need a confidante… it's a lot to take on other people's stuff. I'd be happy to listen. I have an office and everything.

[ Charles is silent. The offer was heart-felt but Charles wasn't sure. Brain meddling and all that. ]
