Hello!
[look at this eager smile. never mind that the camera might be at an awkward angle and not completely focused correctly, technology is hard and she's trying. you can (almost completely) see her smile and wave. at least her voice comes through clearly.]
I have been thinking lately about the nature of this place, how very often people are taken from their loved ones. I wish there was something I could do to remedy that, of course, but given the fact that we're still unable to influence that... I've been considering things I can do to help.
I have some skill with artwork, and I was wondering if anyone would appreciate portraits of their friends or family that aren't currently in the fleet, or even loved ones that have left this place. [a momentary pause.] It may be a bit difficult with only a verbal description of their appearance, but I certainly wouldn't mind if you observe while I complete a sketch and let me know anything that needs correcting or adjusting as I work. I think that should be enough to create a strong likeness. As for materials... I haven't managed to find any paint here, but I do have paper and pencil.
Before anyone speaks of compensation, there is little to do here, and having something to pass the time would be payment enough.

Does it actually help, though? Having a portrait of someone?

It most likely varies between each person. I imagine some would benefit from it, however.

[It isn't like Shinji is going to forget the person he's thinking of. Not in a million years. But...]
If there are other people interested in portraits, they can go ahead of me, it's fine. But I'd like to try this portrait thing when you have the time for it, if you ever do. It's fine if you don't. I don't know if it will help me or not.

I see. I'll find an example.

Could you make me a portrait on something sturdy? Something I could throw, say, knives at?
[It's not that he misses his family - he just wants something productive to aim his anger at once and awhile. Using their faces for target practice seems viable.]

[that earns a curious look, though.]
That's not precisely the purpose I had in mind, though I suppose it is a worthy one depending on the reasoning behind your distaste for whoever it is.
Re: video
[Honestly, isn't that reason enough? He gives her a sunny smile.]

Don't know how much longer we're due to stay here, but there's still plenty of time to bring some supplies on board.

Got to be some people who have that hobby somewhere. What kind of paint do you typically use?
