So here's how it goes: you tell me anywhere you'd rather be but here, with the caveat that it can't just be a home. I think it's safe to say that home is a very understandable answer, but it's also a little too achingly realistic for my purposes. So pick somewhere else. Pick Ibiza. Pick Iceland, if you want.

Like I said, it happened right in the middle of a bad time, and she's awful to begin with. I normally don't end up with nemeses on my civilian identity.

She's being held at a place that can handle her powers. She'll be treated well there but won't be a threat to the public.

...Like, a prison?

Yeah, at the organization I work with sometimes.

Right. They're more equipped to hold enhanced people and aliens than regular prison.

Man, there must be some huge padlocks. [ metaphorically speaking. break-outs from the raft are always horrifying. ]

Well, they were mostly built to contain escaped alien prisoners who landed on Earth so.

Is that a common occurrence?

Katie's asking all the heavy hitting backstory questions tonight.

But yeah, it's the reason the DEO was formed.

[ omg don't call her katie she'll die. ]

So, I'll start pretty early. My mom was a high judge on Krypton, who was responsible for sentencing a lot of criminals. A lot. When she sentenced someone, they went to serve out their term in Fort Rozz, a giant structure that exists in the Phantom Zone. We'll get back to that.

So, Krypton wasn't doing well. You know Global Warming? Think the endgame on that. My mother's sister, my Aunt Astra, and her husband Non were trying to warn the planet to change course, but they weren't listened to. They acted against her authority and had to be imprisoned as a result.

[ all this juicy family drama amirite ]

That can't have been easy on your mother. [ or you, is what she doesn't say. a few quiet words to the server and kate orders another wide round of drinks. tequila shots included. ]

We never talked about it. Turns out they had a lot of secrets from me. But on the other hand, I was 12.

[ tequila shots! woo! she'll do some. in her current state, it takes more for her to get drunk, but it's not impossible for her to loosen up ]

So. Astra was right, which my mother realized too late. Soon enough that my parents and my aunt and uncle on my dad's side put things in motion to save me and my cousin, Kal-El. They put us in individual pods—they weren't really large, and he was an infant. They sent him off first and I followed, with the mission to keep him safe and protect him on Earth.

They cut it close, though, and Krypton exploded before I was out of its blast radius. My pod got knocked off course and stuck in, you guessed it, the Phantom Zone, with Fort Rozz. The Zone acts like a pocket dimension... Time ceased for me inside there, as it did with the prisoners, and I was there for 24 years, though I remained 12. When I became free, Fort Rozz was freed with me, and we all landed on Earth.

I had time to grow up, and the DEO had time to figure out their holding system for alien criminals.

...Do you ever believe that -- somehow -- life has a way of balancing things out? Sure, an alien prison dropped on the world but so did you. So did your cousin. It's like something, somewhere, is trying to keep the ledgers a little bit even.

It's possible, certainly, though it might be more related than random happenstance. I was told by a... frankly unreliable source that my pod was the reason both I and Fort Rozz were able to escape the Phantom Zone. So if my pod hadn't been in there in the first place, then the prison would probably still be in stasis.

How unreliable a source are we talking?

I'm pretty sure she wants to take over Earth. But I don't know why she'd lie about that.

Don't you hate it when the morally dubious opponents are also scathingly truthful? It hardly seems fair.

I think that's what makes them so evil.
