[ kate's surroundings are, quite evidently, a lush little corner of málum. the neon-y blue tinge of the bar's decor casts its colour over her features. there's a tall, impressively concocted cocktail at her elbow. ] I mean, I know I do. So here's how it goes: you tell me anywhere you'd rather be but here, with the caveat that it can't just be a home. I think it's safe to say that home is a very understandable answer, but it's also a little too achingly realistic for my purposes. So pick somewhere else. Pick Ibiza. Pick Iceland, if you want.

Well, unless Iceland is your home. Then please refer to rule numero uno. It also happens to be the game's only rule. [ short and sweet, that's our katerade.

[ a demon. kate crosses her arms -- although she's not impressed, she's also not flippant. this is worth her measured consideration. it's not every day you meet someone who functions on a...cosmic level. ]

[Isn't it the best, Kate? Crowley shrugs, like it doesn't matter all that much.]

Not really. I'm pretty much retired.

...How's the pension?

Abysmal. But they can't find me to murder me terribly, so I'll take it for what it is.

...That something they're likely to do?

[ whoever they are, exactly. ]

Absolutely. I pissed off Hell royally. Not their favourite person by a long shot at present, and they can hold a grudge for a really fucking long time.

A demon who pissed off Hell. Huh. What does that make you, exactly?

[ some kinda reverse-Lucifer? ]

[Crowley considers this for a moment, before pulling a face.]

It makes me complicated.

So complicated that you don't wanna talk about it? [ a beat. ] I can respect that boundary.

It's just a long story and you have to achieve level thirty in friendship for me to be willing to tell it.

...And get me drunk also.

Thirty, huh? [ she makes a show of considering it. realllly thinking about it. and then she sticks out a hand. ] Deal. I'll hit thirty so fast. You won't hardly believe it.

[ challenge accepted. ]

[This will be interesting, people don't usually actively TRY to win his friendship. ]

You think so, hmm? Well, good luck.

[ what can be said? the girl likes a challenge. ]

Nah. No thanks. I don't believe in luck.

So you're the sort who makes their own luck, hmm? Good to know.

I believe in skill. [ and she believes she has a lot of it. ] Luck's just a confluence of the inevitable, really. All the little things that had to happen because of the littler things that had to happen before that. Not fate, exactly, but --

Dominoes.

[Good job, Kate, you've just made yourself a hundred times more interesting. ]

Dominoes. They have to line up just right for you to get rid of the little buggers, or suddenly you're left with excess dominoes and "oh no, you failed" and you have to start it over again.

[ she taps the table -- punctuation, only. sometimes, it's nice to hit upon a narrow wavelength. to understand each other, however briefly. ]

Right? Right. It's never the last domino you have to get right. It's always the first.

[He loves talk like this. Theology. He and Aziraphale could have a discussion that would go on like this for literal decades. ]

Precisely. And half the time you have no idea what to put down first. You just have to weigh it up against the others and hope your opponents don't screw you over during the game.

It takes some delicacy. And forethought. But I'd rather be a well-aimed shot from afar than a blunt instrument. You know what I mean? [ not that she can't dole out blunt blows if the situation calls for it, but kate's always been a human playing alongside enhanced people. it pays to be precise.

Absolutely. The blunt instrument thing is to be used when you have no other choice. Backed into a corner, as it were.

[Or facing Satan himself and knowing you're going to die either way so might as well go for it. ]

And boy, do I hate being backed into a corner.

So do I. It just makes people act desperate and it's stupid.

Yet, here we are. Backed into the galactic-infotainment version of one very big, very mobile corner. Yay us.

You'd think they'd have learned otherwise, with all these cameras supposedly watching us.
