[ kate's surroundings are, quite evidently, a lush little corner of málum. the neon-y blue tinge of the bar's decor casts its colour over her features. there's a tall, impressively concocted cocktail at her elbow. ] I mean, I know I do. So here's how it goes: you tell me anywhere you'd rather be but here, with the caveat that it can't just be a home. I think it's safe to say that home is a very understandable answer, but it's also a little too achingly realistic for my purposes. So pick somewhere else. Pick Ibiza. Pick Iceland, if you want.

Tell me about it. The most familiar face I know is definitely a little...out-of-step. So to speak.

It sucks.

[If she's having the same problem it's not complaining, it's commiserating.]

You think of all these things you want to tell them and then remember they wouldn't get the joke because they haven't done that yet or that they might be disconcerted that you know that about them when they can't even remember ever meeting you. It's terrible.

Something like that.

[ her case is a little...different. every time she sees clint, she has to ask herself -- is it fair to hold him accountable for mistakes he hasn't yet made? mistakes she knows he will make. ]

[Not all that different, if he were willing to share. Anders and all he'd done... Hawke had years to come to terms with it but Anders is still out the earlier end, not even the sort of man who would commit such an act and knowing that has made it come roaring back, wondering if he could change it or if perhaps it's already changed for Anders being here and not there. He doesn't know and there's no one to ask.

Well it's not exactly the same, I grant you. Everyone is different.

Makes you wonder what's kinder. Telling them, or...not.

I don't know. He sort of figured it out, when we talked. That I knew him at least. I don't know what else I should tell him considering what he's done. Does. Will do, in his future.

It's complicated.

I suppose the question you have to ask yourself is...who does telling him help? Does it just alleviate your awkwardness? 'Cause then maybe telling is just too selfish. It's not like he can do anything about it from here.

I don't know. I guess it depends on if he goes back, or if what's done is done. If things could potentially be changed, then it may be better. Or maybe not. Maybe it's supposed to happen that way an changing it would change everything for the worse.

Time travel is always tricky in that capacity. Sure.

Always? Have you had this happen before?

I've known time travelers. That's been confusing enough.

[He grunts in acknowledgement.]

People talk about time travel in theory back home, but no one's been able to achieve it as far as I'm aware. Granted I'm not exactly in the middle of most academic circles.

Time travel. Dimension travel. It's all the same chestnut, just sliced different ways.

A theoretically impossible chestnut, and yet here we are.

[He sighs.]

Still, I'm glad we had this talk. It's nice to know I'm not the only one dealing with this.

Yep. You should ask around for him. Tell him it's too embarrassing sharing even half-a-name with him, and he's gotta shape up and change it. Nothing worse than showing up to a party and realizing you and someone else have both worn the same dress.

I think I'll refrain from passing judgement on someone before I've met them, but if it comes up that he's sullied the Hawke name I'll give him a stern talking to.

[There's a little bit of a knowing look in the slant of his eyebrows.]

Is he the one you're having disparate histories with?
