[ kate's surroundings are, quite evidently, a lush little corner of málum. the neon-y blue tinge of the bar's decor casts its colour over her features. there's a tall, impressively concocted cocktail at her elbow. ] I mean, I know I do. So here's how it goes: you tell me anywhere you'd rather be but here, with the caveat that it can't just be a home. I think it's safe to say that home is a very understandable answer, but it's also a little too achingly realistic for my purposes. So pick somewhere else. Pick Ibiza. Pick Iceland, if you want.

Well, unless Iceland is your home. Then please refer to rule numero uno. It also happens to be the game's only rule. [ short and sweet, that's our katerade.

and maybe about an hour (and maybe another drink) later: ] ...Does anyone wanna come dance with me?

[ because that's the only way she's gonna believe you've been all of those, mister. ]

No, I'm a hunter. People who take care of monsters that the general public tends to think aren't real.

[ clearing her throat, she resists the urge to challenge his hustle.

instead: ] What kind of monsters?

The kind that leave bodies for us to read about.

But... just about any you can imagine, I guess.

[ vague, sam. very vague. ]

Alien? Cosmic? Supernatural? C'mon, you can't just say any I could imagine. I can imagine a lot of things.

Alien... kind of...? Cosmic for sure. Supernatural, always.

I don't know — um. Werewolves, vampires, ghouls and zombies. Wendigos, banshee, wraiths, gods. Demons and angels. A unicorn, a ball-pit shark. A living teddy bear the size of a mascot. Um. A rabbit's foot.

It's a long list.

...Ball-pit shark?

[ because let's be honest, that's the only thing on that list that legit throws her for a loop. ]

Uh, yeah. Long story, but maybe I can shorten it enough. Um. A guy who worked at a kid's pizza chain got involved with witchcraft, started killing off parents and employees with materialized versions of children's worst nightmares.

The kids drew them on special place-mats so that the pizza mascot could 'magic' them away, but obviously this worker had bigger ideas.

Wow, that's twisted. What was his evil origin story?

[He scoffs, but it's a sad little thing.]

Not much to it, really.

Humans can go pretty dark from relatively innocent places. I guess you could just say it was years of build-up after the death of his brother.

He had a lot of issues that he never got over.

-- I'm trying to come up with a quip about how he should have gotten therapy or whatever but, it keeps sounding crass in my head. Quips are less fun when they're cripplingly true.

[It's nice when therapy actually helps.

For a lot of people, it never will. Because, uh. The therapist will think they're clinically insane and they'd get nowhere. Sam certainly would never go to one, wouldn't begin to know how to explain without them assuming he's psychotic.]

Unfortunately.

He ended up killed by his own tool for murder. Fitting for someone who killed all for a manager's position at a kid's pizza place, but it's still depressing.

[ don't mind her overbearing nosiness, but: ] So what does that count as, in Hunter terms? A win? A loss? A draw?

[A moment's pause.]

He was stopped from killing another child's mother or father, but it won't bring back the parents that he already killed. What would you call it? Stopping a murderer from killing more people?

...Definitely a win.

[He smiles a bit. You get it.]

If you don't count them as a win, hunting'll drive you insane.

There's always going to be a causality, in this job. Our work is to stop more.

Right. I'm not a hunter, per se -- but it sounds pretty similar to back home. You can't save them all, and that really weighs on you, but it shouldn't stop you from saving the rest.

Definitely. Saving the rest is what helps you actually sleep a little at night.

[ hm. ]

'A little.'

... In our line of work, people die on your watch. And often, you have to look at bodies of those you were too late for. Between that and knowing what's out there... Sleeping a little is usually the norm.

[... Also, y'know. Losing sleep to thoughts of possession, dead brothers, having your memories altered, being unclean, being a freak, nightmares of future events, being soulless, being unable to sleep from hallucinations of the devil or locked in hell without rest-

Okay look we're a depressing show, what do you want.]

Oh, I know. I just -- [ she huffs a breath. irony. ] I dunno how the heavier hitters do it, back home. Their collateral damage is barely believable. Forget sleeping, I don't know how some of them live with themselves.

It's easier then you're not the cause of the damage; accident or not... once it's in your hands, it changes things.

[Sometimes they really don't live with themselves, but it's alright; sometimes you can make amends for the things that keep you awake at night. Sometimes.]

Does it ever. I was leading a team of superheroes, back home. I'm a little too familiar with the things in your hands suddenly getting out of hand.
