(Marsiva's hospitality cannot erase what Maedhros has endured. He is dressed cleanly and his hair is braided neatly and away from his face. Even his burns have been healed with minimal scarring. But there is something untamed in his eyes.

Something that burns like a hungry, desperate fire.)

...why? (His low voice resonates clearly, cutting through the air with ease. He needn't ever shout.) Surely these quarters are not located within the Halls of Mandos?

(He feels life flowing within him and it is wrong. Lifting his only fist, he hits the nearest wall, clenching his teeth.)

I suppose that depends on your outlook of the situation. I am not sure when or where you will be returned to, if you ever do go home, so it is entirely possible that... well, you will be returned to right where you were.

(He smiles bitterly.) A far worse fate for Kano. (He doesn't fear for himself.)

How do you keep track of the days?

We have calendars, but in space days - at least where I am from - are usually split into "shifts". They're equally split, so it's like day and night, just without a sun. Where I am from we count days in 24 hour periods though, not precisely the rise and set of the sun, which is what seems to be the timeframe here.

I think it will take me some time to adapt to not seeing the sun. (While Elves hold the Moon and Moonlight as more precious, he does like the Sun's fire.)

We see it sometimes, when we stop at planets. This last one not quite so much but a planet with a clearer atmosphere will have plenty of sunlight.

I fear it will not be the same. (There is sorrow in his tone.) What of the Moon?

Depends on the planet. Some have one. Some have more than one. Some have none. The 'planet' itself might be a moon orbiting a much bigger planet.

...more than...one? (What is this blasphemy?)

Yeah. It just depends on how many have fallen into the orbit of the planet. The world I am from, Earth, has one, but there are several other planets in my solar system that have more.

Jupiter, for instance, has a total of sixty-seven that qualify as moons and Saturn has sixty-two.

(He shakes his head slowly.) That...cannot be. Telperion, the White Tree, bore only one Silver Flower before its destruction. That flower was given to Tilion for protection and guidance.

It's not uncommon for a planet to have more than one satellite, especially when they become quite large and have stronger gravitational pulls. Some are able to support life where their planets cannot, and some, like Earth's, are simply dead rock.

Dead...rocks? Supports of life? You are not speaking of the Moon, then. (That makes more sense to him.) It is merely light from one of the Two Trees.

No, they're called moons. Other species and planets might call them different things, but the Earthian term is moon. It's a round rock that floats around Earth's orbit, rises and sets in counter to the sun.

Okay, well, let's try this then - what does the word 'moon' mean to you? Do you have a round, glowing object that appears in your sky at night and that is what you call 'the moon'? Or is it something else?

The Moon is the source of our favored light. It does appear as an orb in the sky, but that is because the light is so bright.

So you guys have moonlight. We do too, but where I am from that is caused by sunlight being reflected off the moon and onto Earth. The moon itself does not produce light.
