Who: Beverly Crusher, Wrath, The Vision, Jennifer Keller… and maybe you?
Broadcast: No
Action: Iskaulit, Surgical Suite
When: Today!

There’s a new room on the Iskaulit, though it’s not obvious where it is, if you don’t know about it already, as it is inconspicuously tucked away in one of the unused corridors of the ship. More importantly, it’s equipped with biometric security systems, so only a select few can enter without being accompanied by one of the room’s designers. Under Dr. Crusher and Captain Vision’s guidance, various engineers and doctors in the fleet have come together to build a surgical suite with one specific goal in mind: fixing Wrath’s back and removing the ports put there by Compliance. For over a year, Wrath and Beverly have been pursuing this goal and now it’s finally happening.

In the operating room itself, there are only three people, besides Wrath: Dr. Crusher, Dr. Keller, and the Vision, in case they run into any issues with Wrath’s cybernetic implants. However, for those who wish to watch the surgery, there is a small observation lounge looking down into the OR, where you are welcome to stay and watch. The two doctors and Vision are all covered head to toe in scrubs, masks, and gloves, while Wrath lies prone on the operating table, with cushions supporting her neck and hips, and her limbs securely strapped in to keep her safely in position. An IV delivers her pain meds and anesthesia. Gently, Beverly kneels in front of an already fading Wrath and places a respirator over her face. “All right, Wrath, ready? I’m going to count backwards from ten. 10, 9, 8…”

Hours later, Beverly has successfully removed the shattered ports, working from her experience with Borg implants. It’s delicate, tedious work, but she never falters, her hands steady throughout. If there was any doubt as to her surgical skills before, there can be none now. Afterwards, Wrath is back in traction in the recovery room. She may still be a little drowsy, but no doubt she will welcome visitors.

((ooc: this is a catch-all post for anything relating to Wrath's surgery, especially post-op, for anyone who is involved either as a friend or as another healer))

OTA - after the surgery

Surgery is grueling.

He's never done it before, and technically he still hasn't considering all he did was stand aside in a gown and a mask and cast whatever spells he could think of to help. The other mage present was a blessing; he's not sure he could manage such long term and sustained magic without a partner in it, and though Nightingale's magic was about as strong as his in Creation, with the both of them combined they did some good. According to Beverly anyway.

It's good to have that confirmed though.

After Wrath has been moved back to recover, Hawke having cast one last spell on the wounds where her implants had been to hasten the time it takes for them to heal, he drops himself into a chair - any chair - and lets out a long breath he hadn't even been aware he was holding. Then he smiles. It's wonderful to feel as if he'd made a difference, especially since he didn't have to knock out anyone's teeth to do it. This mode of helping is far preferable to what he usually has to do.

If anyone would like to approach and talk to him, now's the time. In a few minutes, once he's recovered a little energy, he plans on visiting the patient.

And then taking a very long nap. Mana depletion is a killer.

Surgery was most definitely exhausting. While Jennifer was in the moment, of course, she felt nothing but razor sharp focus and the surge of adrenalin that came with knowing she was doing what she did best, but afterward... afterward was when everything hit.

So once she'd cleaned up and Wrath was all set up in recovery, Jennifer, too, flopped down, taking a chair next to the mage, but she managed to give him a tired smile.

"Thank you for your help in there."

"You're welcome, though I don't feel I was all that much help. Creation magic is something I made a point of learning but I've never been any more good at it than patching wounds until they can be properly healed later. This was extraordinary."

He smiles gently to her, turning his head to finally get a good look. He was too preoccupied with keeping Wrath stable before to really take in anyone else involved besides Beverly.

"If doctors in Thedas could do what you did in there, they might garner more respect."

"Having some backup was still helpful, though. I wasn't familiar with a lot of the technology inside Wrath's body, so every little patch could have saved us from a disaster."

Jennifer grinned at the compliment.

"Well, thank you. I'm actually glad I had the chance to do something like this, honestly. I feel like I don't get the chance to exercise my skills as a surgeon often enough here."
wolfehawke: (look aside)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-06 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Nor was I, but a body is a body at least, and since we were removing some things to return them to what I know, that made it easier." Not that much easier though. He can't imagine how painful it was on Wrath to have that all put in, much less taken out.

"I would hope you not having to use your skills often would be a good thing, though, considering that something has to be wrong for you to be called in."

[personal profile] forsometimenow 2016-07-07 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Jennifer crossed her arms and thought about that.

"Yeah, it is good that people don't suffer serious injuries more often," she agreed. "This is actually the worst attack we've had since I arrived here. Atroma doesn't seem to like us getting hurt."

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you know who caused it?" He'd seen some things on the network in passing, but since no one was calling for blood he hasn't done much looking into it. He'd been newly arrived at the time and hadn't wanted to jump headfirst into a sticky situation, though if there had been further attacks afterwards then he would have felt responsible.

Good thing there weren't.
forsometimenow: (thinking)

[personal profile] forsometimenow 2016-07-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Jennifer shook her head.

"I'd never met him before, so I'm not sure what could have possibly provoked him, either," she said thoughtfully. "Again, incidents like this are very unusual, so it was either Atroma meddling, or... we might have reason to fear further outbursts."
wolfehawke: (Unsure)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-11 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
"I doubt it was Atroma. As you said, they don't seem to like us getting hurt." He frowns deeply, but also looks as if he just had something unpleasant confirmed. "We'll just have to be vigilant."
forsometimenow: (*sigh*)

[personal profile] forsometimenow 2016-07-11 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
She nodded.

"We're working on getting caches of medical supplies set up around the Iskaulit, at least," she replied. "And I've been training people in first aid. I've wanted to have a full-scale clinic here for a while, but there are too many logistics and staffing problems..."
wolfehawke: (weh)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, I saw. I've gathered some elfroot from on planet for potions but I'm not sure how to make them. I always just bought them. Anders might know, though."

He looks at the ceiling for a moment, thinking. "You might be able to staff a clinic if the medical officers on other ships took shifts of a few hours. They'd have to agree on it, though." He remembers just how vehemently against sticking his neck out Anders was during the initial attack, even if he was coerced into it eventually.

"I can see your problem."
forsometimenow: (looking up)

[personal profile] forsometimenow 2016-07-13 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you do manage to find someone who can make them, please do let me or Dr. Crusher know," Jennifer said, perking up. "I'll take anything I can get when it comes to helping my patients."

She then nodded and smiled ruefully.

"And we never know when one of us is going to be incapacitated or just... sent home from here," she replied. "Supplies are an issue, too. Our own medbays are stocked thanks to Atroma, but we'd need to have enough to stock a clinic, and a source of funding so that patients don't have to pay for our services. Too many potential problems."
wolfehawke: (Sheepish)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I wonder if there's a way to appeal to sponsors. Chantry sisters go door to door or leave up fliers for tithes to the church, and this is a worthier cause. Maybe get others to appeal to Atroma all together? It might be something the sponsors would go for."

Nightingale has flopped on over on a few chairs nearby. She doesn't seem physically exhausted- Mana depletion isn't that big of a problem for her- But that level of emotional exhaustion is a rare thing.

She just lifts a hand to wave weakly to Hawke, in a form of feeble thanks for their work together on Wrath.
wolfehawke: (Small smile)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-04 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He waves back, similarly exhausted even if the cause is different.

"Thank you. I think she'll be able to recover fully, now. And more quickly than without magical help."

"No, I should be the one thanking you... I wouldn't have been able to do anything without another healer handy." She sighs, rolling slightly to turn her head to face him better. "I'm a terrible healer."
wolfehawke: (I see what you did there)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-08 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"I couldn't tell by what you did in there." He grins. "I'm not much of a healer myself. I know enough to stop bleeding or seal a cut, but anything more advanced and I just don't have the finesse. I'm much better with combat magic."
experiencepoints: (Dishonor on your cow.)

"Same here." She groans, waving a hand, with little gusts of wind flicking off from it. "I have enough casts of Fire3 stocked to kill just about anything, but even a little healing takes all of my MP to get anything done."
wolfehawke: (wuzzah)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-10 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"MP? Is that what you call mana?" Through context that's what it sounds like. "And what do you mean by casts being stocked? Don't you just know a spell and that's that?"
experiencepoints: (pic#7739409)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-07-10 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sort of?" She answers hesitantly, trying to figure out how to explain. "MP is Magic Points... Um, basically, it's a numerical representation of the amount of mana you have. Yeah, I know my spells, but they each require a certain amount of MP to cast. I have two hundred seventy MP at my maximum, and each cast of Fire3 costs thirty, so... nine casts stocked when I'm at full, and less when I cast other spells. Does that make sense?"
wolfehawke: (half smile)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-11 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Interesting. I was never taught anything so exact. For me, it's more something I just... fell. I know I can summon ice and then I know when I'm too spent to do so anymore without rest or a lyrium potion. I've never counted just how may times I can do it before I can't anymore, and I suspect the number varies depending on a lot of factors." Willpower has a lot to do with it, and that does change if his circumstances change, like who he's fighting or who he's protecting.

"It's fascinating that you can count it out like that."
experiencepoints: (What am I s'posed to do with this chikn)

[personal profile] experiencepoints 2016-07-11 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
"What's 'lyrium'?" is all she can think to ask. There's more she wants to say, but... She's had enough of people calling her world a game. She's tired of hearing how strange her world is, and she knows that if she mentions that she knows all her stats, and everyone in her world does, that's just going to come back out.
wolfehawke: (cmoooon)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's a mana rich ore that we use to make potions and focus crystals when its processed. Raw lyrium can kill you." He shrugs, lyrium such a mundane thing that he doesn't think to expand on it. He's more interested in just how exacting her world is with magic. Measuring things like that seems far from a game to him, more like her entire world is full of mathematicians and scholars, putting numbers to things and able to measure what he previously thought to be immeasurable.

"I'd be interesting in hearing more about how your magic and such works, when you're up to it." He's not going to put upon her now, not when they both need a good long nap.

She lifts a hand wearily, and a burst of light and sparkles appears around it, before her hand drops back down.

"Like that." She deadpans. "But another time, that sounds good. I'm working on some magic studies here, anyway."
wolfehawke: (half smile)

[personal profile] wolfehawke 2016-07-31 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
He gives an amused snort at her little fireworks display. "Like I said, when you're up to it. And let me know if you need any help with the magical studies. I'm not very academic, but I can hold my own."
