[when the screen turns on, there's nothing but blackness for a few minutes, followed by a string of very angry-sounding curses. There's the sound of fumbling before a woman's face comes into frame, and she squints at the camera before her eyebrows turn down in a scowl.

If this is supposed to be some sort of joke, then I am not laughing. Though I find it rather cute that you seem to have made your walls fire-proof.

We shall see what else your bloody ship can stand up to. Return my damn weapons.

I do not know if my family's name is old, but I know it comes from the mainland. All names with the "le" or the "la" in them do.

Oh? Why is that?

[she shakes her head]

I wish I knew. I do not know a lot about the mainland, let alone human family names.

The chronology of the names sounds fascinating.

It can be, mm. My mother's family is very, very old, but they are also nobility . . . in a sense.

What sense would that be?

It's . . . mm. [she pauses, trying to think of how to put it]

My understanding of human nobility is that it is inherited, yes? And that it involves wealth and influence?

[ He nods. ]

That's usually the gist of it.

Elven nobility is a bit different. An Elder is a very important position to hold in a village, and their standing is equivalent to that of what human nobility is considered; they are part of a council responsible for making decisions that will effect the entire village, whether it be how to handle a bad harvest or - more recently - whether or not to involve themselves in a war. And in turn, the village holds them and their families in high regard. It is not strange to seek an Elder out for smaller decisions, because they are seen as wise and trustworthy. Wealth plays no part.

It is similar to humans in that it is inherited - there are families who have been apart of the council for thousands of years. But should a family's line end, or there is a reason to remove an Elder from their position, someone else will be chosen in their place. It happens rarely, but that is how my mother's family became involved. A family had no heir, and my great-grandfather was asked to take their place. Since then, it has been passed down in my family as well.

[a shrug] My uncle is an Elder, and upon his passing, my cousin is meant to take his place.

Fascinating. I didn't think people in a council could be so easily replaced.

Honestly, from what I have been told it does not change much. They are still looked upon with the same respect - they simply do not involve themselves in the more important matters anymore.

What matters would that be?

Village-wide decisions. Like joining the war, how to handle individuals who break their laws - there is no - police? - or knights in an Elvish village, but there are guards who answer to the council as well.

And other things. [a shrug] Like if they should allow an abomination into their village.

I've never liked that word.

Nor do I. But I hear it often enough that it no longer bothers me. And I have certainly been called worse, especially recently.

That's no excuse for it. Or any kind of derogatory language.

To correct what I said, then - the council was convening to see if a half-blood should be allowed into their village.

I have not heard word yet on a decision. Not that I particularly need it.
