[ The video starts, shaky before it focuses on Charles. Well, Charles and the suddenly large box that drops in his path, effectively blocking him. For a minute, he glances around, surprised before he tentatively opens the box --

And the music starts, tinny and loud. He winces as he pulls out the swimming caps from the box. The note attached says, "Congratulations on getting closer to baldness!". Charles drops the caps back in the box. ]

Charming. I don't suppose anyone wants these? Free of charge

[ Action - locked to Erik, Raven, Hank and Moira ]

[ They had decided on the beach . . . though it seems that as though the plans were made ahead of time. Charles isn't bothered, more amused and touched by the amount of preparation and dedication that had gone into the event. He hadn't celebrated his birthday in years, years spent with Hank in an empty mansion, trying to down out each other's mutual sorrow.

Now . . . he's not sure how to feel about it, but the feeling of appreciation hasn't wavered yet. It's close to late evening and the sun is setting over the vast sea. ]

( Charles can be found on the Heron for most of the day, save for the evening )

Well, professor, if we take into account that there are no cosmetics companies to create such a commercial, and that even if there were any, they usually don't hire anyone over thirty -- evidence do seem to indicate it was a joke.

[ he'd suggest he film one himself for fun, but he's getting the feeling that'd be misinterpreted as well and...they don't really need the help to be awkward. ]

Good, fun is good. Or, well, fun but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to define a word by using itself, I'm just -- gonna let you go have your fun.

[ smile? ]

Then I've lost my touch at witty remarks.

[ He runs a hand through his hair. ]

It will be . . . interesting. Momentous, in a way.

I hope so, cuz otherwise it'd mean I lost my wit, and I'd rather lose my hair.

Not a lot of celebratory opportunities back home?

[ he gets it...if he and all his friends will be there by the time his birthday rolls around it'll be the first time in years he'll have more than one friend to celebrate it with. and a girlfriend, too. and people who are like family. ]

A wise decision, though I don't know if I agree.

[ He rather likes his hair. ]

No, not many. We're all busy achieving different goals. As a result, we're not . . . together very often.

That's because you already lost your wit.

[ mournful nod. ]

I'm glad you get to do it today.

As am I. I'm very thankful.

It's the best present ever, isn't it.

It's one I'll remember for a long time.

[ he nods with a smile. ]

Take some pictures. They'll help when your memory follows your hair.

My memory is fine, thank you. Despite the constant workings of magical places and people.

Wow, you weren't kidding about losing your touch.

[ tilting his head. ]

[ He rubs his neck. ]

I suppose I'm not at my best today.

It's ok -- I'll just dial down on the wit. It'll be a real struggle, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice, [ please get that he was joking. ] it being your birthday and all. We can serious-talk.

I appreciate it.

[ He shakes his head. ] There's no need. It's not that -- special a day.

It might not be to you, but I'm pretty sure the rest of your family picnicking crowd'll disagree.

That's probably why I wouldn't bring that up with them.

If you wanna be convincing while you're not bringing it up - I'd try smiling a little more.

I'm saving it for the evening.

Ah - good thinking, wouldn't want to run out.

I'd hate that to happen.

I know I always do.

[ nodding. ]

Right I'll uh - get out of your hair. Happy birthday, Charles.

[ He softens. ]

[ when he gets back to his room after the picnic, he'll find a small and bizarre looking potted plant waiting by his door, with a note attached to it - until proven otherwise, I grow on smiles ]

[ Charles stares at it for a bit. The gift-giving, the tiny picnic in the corner of the world, untouched by fear was . . . almost too much. If he hadn't relaxed his suspicions since he got on this planet, he probably would have reacted badly and Charles doesn't wish that on anyone.

Still . . . looking now, there is a glimmer of hope. Perhaps there's something not so irreparable about him, that's enough for people to come back. ]
