(Frustration is bound to get the better of Maedhros. He does not come from a patient family and the ships offer new obstacles to someone who is missing a hand. Currently, his hair is damp, his pale, freckled skin rosy from a fresh wash.)

Orro, none of this was made for one my size! (He tugs on a shirt that is not exactly the right length. It reveals part of his nearly-emaciated abdomen.)

Does anyone have suggestions? I can barely care for myself in these confines. (And that is...aggravating. Very much so.)

Atar? Toron? Cousin? (This is him waving the white flag for day to day tasks. Either he is going to cut his hair or have to (embarrassingly) ask someone to help him braid it.)

[ He takes the brush, starting on Maedhros' hair automatically and shakes his head ]

I still... I was... if I am the only one left behind, then I need... I need to remember.

(It is a little known fact that he likes his hair being brushed and braided. He catches Maglor's hand on one pass and frowns into his eyes.)

I would much rather you live. Live the life we all should have had.

[ Maglor blinks at him, and there is no comprehension in his eyes ]

How can I, when you are all gone?

(Maedhros moves to rest their heads together.)

One step at a time. Leave yourself open for joy.

[ Maglor bumps back, gently ]

I don't know if I remember how, but if you wish it Nelyo, I will try.

(He grins and smoothes over Maglor's hair.)

I believe in you. I do wish it and I know you will succeed.

[ Maglor leans a little into that hand appreciatively ]

For you, Nelyo, I will do my best.

Your best has never disappointed me. (Maedhros tugs on Maglor's ear affectionately.)

Truly? [ He blinks up at him and then yelps, swatting at the tugging hand ]

Nelyo!

I do not say words just to hear myself talk. (He snickers at the yelp, eyes shining.) Yes, Kano?

Are you sure about that?

[ He sniffs and smacks him fondly with the brush ]

You know my ears are sensitive!

Fairly sure. (He accepts the smack, smirking.) I think I know me.

Ah is that so? (Feigning shock, he reaches for one of Maglor's ears again.)

Nelyo!

[ he squawks and flails, earlier gloom forgotten ]

(Mission accomplished! He catches one flailing arm and rests his cheek against it.)

You are much stronger than you were as an Elfling. I won't push you too far.

[ Cheat ]

Well so are you.

[ Maglor retorts, but his palm curls shyly to touch his brother ]

And yes, I feel better now, thank you brother.

I think you are stronger than me, little brother. (At least in his heart. Maedhros pulls Maglor into a one-armed embrace.)

I love you as you are; you need not pretend or set grand goals for yourself.

[ Maglor curls into his brother's embrace with a low, contented hum ]

No one could ever be stronger than you, Nelyo.

(He wishes keenly that he could protect Maglor and all of his family like this. It feels much safer when he embraces one he loves, but he knows the feeling is fleeting.)

Who survived it all? Who carried our memory? Who sang to the sea?

[ This is something Maglor never thought he would have again and he is happy to be selfish and cling ]

I...well. I did not...I just did not want to forget...

(Clinging is welcomed! Maedhros rubs over his brother's back, listening intently.)

I cannot blame you. I would not forget any of you either.

[ This time, Maglor lets Maedhros settle him, calming ]

I wanted to make sure... no one else would make the same mistake. And... I did not want... the only memories of you to be as monsters...

Ah do not spend your life bettering our name. We traveled down a path of ruin and we must carry that stain. Make songs of us as we were in Valinor, Kano. Let the rest work itself out.

(He closes his eyes with a sigh.)

I want to... [ He whispers softly, leaning against his brother and listening to his heartbeat ]

It is not right, that they only think of you so badly, and forget all the good things you did.
