Having an engineering augment had seriously helped him with the ability to have some breathing space on the rather overly metal surfaces of the First Breath. Not that he didn't love his ship - honestly he spent as much time there chatting up Lily and Hawke as he did sleep.

Let's face it, Tyrion wasn't much for sleeping. So when he wasn't working on the Engineering of the ship (hour or two, tops), or his own projects (four to five depending on how late he stayed up), then managing the bar (eight hours), he still had time on his hands. So he would take that shuttle, and head out into the deep dark (don't think about it, do not even think about not having air), to visit.

If you are expecting a handsome - well at least charming - dwarf, do feel free to open your airlocks. No worries, he can break in if necessary.

"After that ... after that I will finally be free to live my life without having to worry about looking over my shoulder." Tyrion's fingers paused, then he shifted to a more mellow movement. "Perhaps I will even find some woman insane enough to marry me. Have a child - have a dozen."

Kirk tilted his head at Tyrion, a flicker of sympathy, pity, and concern in his eyes - and, ultimately, sadness. He moved his piece, continuing with his aggressive tact and taking Tyrion's.

"You're a better man than me. Just the thought of one child terrifies me, let alone a dozen."

Tyrion let out a snort of bitter laughter at that, before he shifts around and takes Jim's piece with one foul swoop, and then pronounces. "Check. Don't be an idiot, Jim. I think we both know who the better man is, between us. My having children is about as selfish as it gets - I want to give them everything my father never gave me."

This time Jim is quick, countering with his own check and setting them back on equal footing. It was shaping up to be a good match, even over their conversation.

"I wouldn't say having children is selfish," he said with a curious slant his way. "I admire people who want children and can be good parents to them. The selfish thing is producing them and then not taking responsibility for them. But, you're right, maybe in a way it is selfish, but I think it's the forgivable kind."

Well, Tyrion had just started with chess -- but any game with strategy was something he was going to easily master. He rubbed his beard, before he shifted his tactics to see what Jim would do - from offensive to defensive. "So we are both good men, or are we both bad men who want to be good men?"

"I think we are both okay men, who want to keep doing good, even though sometimes we make bad choices. But that's being human, isn't it?" he said, recognizing the tactic shift. It takes a few seconds of thought and he comes in, still maintaining his previous aggressive assault, only a little differently this time.

"I suppose it is. We are all both good and bad, depending on our choices and the moment. Just some people seem to make more bad choices than others." He smirked, before he shifted his pieces and allowed Jim to charge in, to see what he would do.

"Yes, I suppose that's true," he chuckled, moving his piece forward, but instead of charging in, he went a touch sideways. Going straight through the center would see him dead and he knew it. This would be a tight game, and he thought he might win, but he would not be surprised if Tyrion snatched it from him at the end. He seemed that kind of canny.

Tyrion hummed, before sighing softly and letting himself sacrifice a piece to try and get a better idea of how to attack Jim. Unless he was going to have to keep moving around to attack the other man's pieces.

Oh. My. He might have to. "I suppose it is, at that."

Jim never made anything easy, least of all for someone like Tyrion, whom he knew was intelligent enough to grab the game quickly and be a threat. Besides, it wasn't a challenge if he went easy on him and never did like doing the expected.

"You're sure this is your first time playing this game, Tyrion?"

Tyrion rubbed his chin for a moment, before tipping his chin over at the other man. One corner of his mouth lifted.

"Chess, no. Three-dimensional chess? Absolutely. The rules seem to be the same ... for the most part."

"For the most part," he agreed, and abruptly changed his tactic, come in from an exploitative direction using the 3D aspect of the board. "Check."

"Yes for the most part." He snorted softly, as he shifted his king to safety. "Although I think one might have to be rather good at mathematics to really win. At least the three dimensional kind."

"I'm sure it's something you could pick up fairly quickly," he said with confidence, even as he pressed his assault, taking back the check.

"We shall see ... " Right, so, best just go with the unexpected. Think out of the box. He shifted a pawn down the board, while planning another forward front attack with his next move, then went on the defensive in the next.

That was usually best with Kirk. He was an unconventional thinker at the best of times, which tended to frustrate his instructors back in the Academy days.

He grinned as the battle became closer between them, clearly enjoying himself as he countered Tyrion. He knew they were drawing to the finish, be tight for sure.

Tyrion paused after a few moments, taking a close look at the board, then tutted under his breath and gently lay his king down on the side. "I can already see your moves - there's no way I'm getting out of this one. Well played though, friend."

He offered his hand, with a little smile. "I won't be caught off-guard, next time."

He bowed his head in acknowledge of the compliment, breathing a sigh of relief inwardly. There had been a chance that Tyrion would take the game from him, and though it was just a friendly game, his competitive spirit was hardly dimmed.

"I would never think to let my guard down around you," he shook the other's hand. "You do learn scarily fast."

I do have a rather large learning curve, don't I? [Tyrion mused, his mis-matched eyes gleaming with humor.]

Well, then I suppose you ought to polish up your game, hm? [He smirked as he jumped out of the chair, and bowed.] Captain, until we meet again.
