The Stalker found it in the communications equipment. No one here knows when or how it got there.

[he finally stops pacing and grabs one his notebooks and a pencil, in order to keep track of all of this properly]

Did anyone inspect the communications equipment before, do we know it wasn't there from the start? Or that...he didn't put it there?

[ because I mean, come on. the stalker? it's right there in the name. that's the guy threatening kitty's ship, he's not beyond suspicion to winn. he's pretty sure the guy never set foot on the windrose or the tourist and still those ships were bugged but -- he could've sent someone else to do his dirty work. bribery doesn't seem like something that'd be above someone with that name.

winn leans in to examine the device. (it is exciting to work on. especially with his nerdbros, he loves jim but the guy is too serious for his own good sometimes, he's definitely too serious for winn's fun's good.) ]

I'm going to have nightmares over that one. So I ran some standard tests, I still don't know what that thing was doing though I have my suspicions but what I do know is that it's off for sure so whoever's at the other end can't hear us.

[yeah sure "Stalker" is a creepy moniker to go by, but Hank is certain that he wasn't responsible for the device. It didn't seem like something he would do] Though I couldn't tell you how long it's been there; I've looked over the equipment before, but not thoroughly enough to have noticed it.

[which - maybe that's on him, as captain. But he isn't about to guilt over something like that right now]

Doubt it, if this is the Atroma [ which, really that's his best guess. ] that's not how they're listening in, it'd be way too easy. Once we knew it was there, it wasn't that hard to find, which means they wanted us to find it. Which means - listening in wasn't the objective.

[ what is the objective, though? he can't quite figure it out. if he could track the signal while it was connected - but leaving it connected was just too risky. ]

Jim thought it might be meant to cut us off from help, but we didn't find anything on the shuttles...did you inspect yours?

I gave it a look, they're good, nothing out of the ordinary.

[ those things could have been decoys, planted for the sake of a plot, what would our heroes do when they find out the mystery boxes? sort of a thing. they are a part of a space soap opera, after all. still, the engineer in him just wants to break it apart and see what makes it tick. ]

Think it was a work of someone from the handholding planet?

I looked, too. I didn't see anything.

[he taps his foot against the ground before he begins pacing again. If it wasn't the Atroma, then who? Or what? Why put it in there in such a way that they'd eventually find it? And why was the Golden the only ship affected]

Mm, no, they weren't very advanced when it came to tech. But what about the moon? Or - one of the waystations we stopped at along the way?

It could've been a decoy, I mean they have a tree capable of reaching through the dimensional and temporal barriers and pull objects back through - I'm still thinking that the same kinda tech the Atroma used. Or, there could have been a traveler mixed in with the locals, all they'd have to do to go undetected is avoid skin-to-skin contact - that's not impossible.

[ he shakes his head ]

Without tracing the signal, without a database to compare the tech to, I don't think we have a shot at figuring out its origin. Right now - we should focus on figuring out what it does.

Well, looking at it, I got nothing except that it's shut down. I don't know if we can turn it on again or if we want to turn it on again. I say we break this baby open.
