Starstruck

[With Pietro showing up, it seemed like the thing to do to check in on Wanda. Natasha had kept an eye open for the girl, but unsurprisingly their paths hadn't crossed by accident since then. She could have sent a private message—maybe should have—but the kind of distance that talking to someone through a screen would hide clues to Wanda's emotional state that Natasha would rather not miss.

It made the most sense to drop in. Have surprise on her side. See Wanda face to face.

That's how Natasha found herself on the SS Starstruck, standing outside her younger teammate's door like she belonged there and knocking confidently. Will Wanda even be in? On the other hand, would Natasha be here if she weren't?]

Starstruck - later

[It's a less confident Natasha who slips off of the ship after her meeting with Wanda, a Natasha with new memories and nursing a stabbing headache. She'd just as soon sneak off the ship without running into anyone else at this point; she could use a little time to herself to recover and regroup.

Even a spy might have a hard escaping a spaceship unnoticed, though.]

Vanquish

[Back on her own ship, Natasha retreats to her bunk almost immediately. She lays down for a bit—but she doesn't stay down long. After enough time to push aside the worst of her nagging headache, she throws herself into activity. Nothing useful. Nothing that takes focus. But empty action, something to work off a little energy while her thoughts are elsewhere. Pushups. Sit ups. Lunges. Whatever she can do with the space she has.

Eventually, the workout might spill out into the corridor...]

Iskaulit

[But after that, her workout will take her to a real gym, somewhere she can actually open up. Anyone who finds her here might run into Natasha taping up her hands before laying into a heavy bag. Or they might run into her working her frustration off on the bag itself. Spectators might be impressed—if they don't know her, and if they don't know people with superpowers. She's stronger than most people take her for, though, and her form is more or less flawless, if you notice those things.

She stays in the gym for a long while, until she feels herself back on top of her emotions. All of her reactions have been identified, categorized and compartmentalized.

That's when she she finally wanders over to one of the bars.

She's earned a drink.]

[ It doesn't benefit them to tell people their business until they want. Forcing either of their hands puts them in a corner that's a bitch to get back out of. ]

None of it was her fault. She's not likely to believe it, though.

[ Because it's the same song and dance that he's trying and failing to navigate. ]

No, she's not. [There's no doubt in Natasha's voice as she says it. She sounds flat, focusing on her fists.

There's not much conviction either as she says:] It's not anyone's fault. Sometimes things just work out a way. No one's really to blame.

[Or maybe it's just not productive to start assigning blame. She's still working on actually believing that.]

I don't think it was any one thing. It all just built up and imploded on itself.

[ The Accords, T'Chaka's death, Zemo, Lagos.. Really, most of those only helped to tip the scale that's been building for years. ]

More or less. [She bows her head a little.] Something was bound to give eventually. Just turned out when it happened, it was us.

You're probably right. Some of us have been involved too long.

[ Whether they wanted to be or not. ]

[There's a pause after her next punch, her eyes flicking up.]

Some of us, maybe. But you were out until the bombing. If it weren't for that, you could have gone right on doing whatever it was you were doing for two years.

[ He resolutely does not make eye contact with her. Bucky's thought about that more than once. If Zemo hadn't drawn him out, he'd still be in Romania.. having some semblance of a life- even in hiding.

Instead, he's holed up in Wakanda, arm busted and back in fucking cryo waiting for a cure for his fucked up head. ]

I could have.

I wouldn't call that doing it too long.

[She doesn't know that she wants to argue with Barnes about his role in this. She doesn't say it to change his mind, but he might as well know that she doesn't see him as at fault here either.]

Been involved since I didn't die falling from that train.

[ HYDRA got him involved, even if he never wanted to in the first place. He's a threat because of his power. For what he did under HYDRA's control. ]

[Her lips twitch and she drops her eyes and her fists. She's not going to agree with that, but she can't disagree with it either.

In the the end—she recognizes the sentiment. It's only been recently that Natasha has felt in control of her own involvement. Even her original association with the Avengers had been a matter of necessity, circumstances pulling her along one way or the other.

In a way, that was why it was why it was so hard to let go of the Avengers. She had finally been choosing how to use her skill set for herself. She hadn't been ready to retire.

Rather than answer him, she twists on one foot and levels a solid kick on the heavy beg, putting her frustration into the attack.]

[ She can disagree all she wants, it doesn't change the fact that's how he thinks.

It's always difficult to work your way around feelings when someone forces your hand before you're quite ready to take it on. He hadn't been prepared for running into Steve in Bucharest, there hadn't been time to figure out what to say. There's never time when you need it.

Bucky grunts when her kick lands, and stumbles back a few steps. Distracted, stupid. If he was focused, the bag wouldn't have moved. Hopefully it didn't take her off center too much. It will be much easier not to get distracted when he can actually spar with her. ]

[Her balance shifts forward, quickly recovering when she doesn't meet the resistance she expects. She leans back, not breathing as hard as she wants to be—there's only so much of a workout she's going to get with a bag, though.]

You okay?

Fine, I got distracted.

[ Bucky shifts, righting himself. Totally fine, didn't lose his balance at all, either. ]

[Natasha studies him briefly before lifting her chin, accepting his answer.]

Maybe that's a good place to call it a day.

Maybe so. Next time, it'll be a sparring match.

[ He gives her a nod in reply. ]

[That get's a flash of something, curiosity or amusement, maybe a little skepticism.]

More interesting than punching a bag, at least.

Should be. Unless this is still out of commission. [ He motions to his arm. ]

Then you might not have a whole lot of competition.

You really think I'm the one who's worried about not getting competition.

Never like to assume. And if I remember right, you can hold your own.

I remember holding on while you tried to buck me off like a mechanical bull.

[Clearly joking. Natasha knows her skill level, and she won't say she felt out classed by Barnes but she also knows that she's not a super soldier; she's a spy first and foremost, and if she keeps up it's by not playing fair.]

I'd be up to it again on a more level playing field.

[ Somewhere that's not do-or-die. He won't be trying to kill her, and she won't be fighting for her life and trying to stick a knife in him. ]

I'd like that.

[And she meant that. Her mood isn't good—improved though. At least she's calmer.

And she's surprised to find she'd be interested in how she met that challenge now.]

Next time, then.

[ For now, though, he'll leave her to finishing her workout so he can abscond back to his ship before too many people start showing up. ]
