As I have said I would, I shall speak of magics. Or rather the basics of one particular form of magic. Attend well.

[Loki has set up the video in his gym, since it has sufficient space and mirrors.]

What mortals oft times call magic is but science of a higher sort than they have capacity to comprehend. All is but working change upon the ordered laws of the universe with strength of will and an understanding of how and what to manipulate.

Light shall be our example. [Because everyone already knows he can do illusions. This is giving nothing away, really, because knowing the mechanics of what he does won't make it less impressive.]

Light is a substance in constant flux of state. It exists simultaneously in many forms until it is directed one way or another.

[He begins to write equations in the air with light, his handwriting precise and very angular, explaining as he goes. People who are very up in their mathematics and quantum physics will be able to recognize portions describing the wave-particle duality of light, though Loki seems to be describing a great many quantum states beyond that.]

Understanding this, one might manipulate the light that exists in this room to reflect far differently, or refract in new ways.

[He goes through a series of demonstrations, first building a delicate model of a horse from light that runs, then revealing an invisible object and describing mathematically the illusion that allows light to seem to pass through something solid. Then step by step, he builds the room into a section of forest in Alfheim, which seems to stretch on into the misty distance despite the apparent dimensions of the former room.

It's quite a show, but perhaps more interesting is his expression as he works through all of this. He's genuinely enjoying himself, perhaps the most relaxed most people have ever seen him.]

And the mechanism of all of this?

[He smiles remembering the day he had been taught this by Frigga.] We are made of the same stuff as light. We must only remember and become part of it once more.

[And with that, he seems to disintegrate into green and gold miss. The video ends.

But he's around his place in the Iskaulit if anyone wishes to seek him out, or can be called upon for questions. And later? Buy him a drink at Crowley's bar.]

That is more my brother's style.

Red wine it is, then. [ and she pours the glass with a flourished twist. kate's smile is distant -- not too friendly -- but perhaps just a little too pointed. like there's a question she wants to ask, but hasn't yet decided how to frame. ] It's a little merlot-y, without actually being a merlot. If that makes any sense. It's more like a merlot ran away and had a love-child with some bizarre alien grape.

[He waits until she hands him the glass and sniffs it delicately, then sips.] It does well enough.

[He raises an eyebrow at her, just a slight quirk. She might have something to ask, but he's going to just wait until she asks it.]

That's kind of the watchword of the fleet, isn't it? Enough. Just about close enough to red wine, to food, to an actual functional whatever-this-is. [ kate raises a glass of her own -- empty, and in the process of being polished. ]

Almost-society.

In a prison, all one might hope for is sufficiency.

I'm not certain I'd call this place a prison. [ she waffles on this -- almost daily. and so this doesn't smack of some deep argument, merely the gently worded musing of someone who hasn't yet made up her mind. ]

Maybe it's more like a boarding school. Or -- [ a sharp smile ] -- a nursing home.

Invisible walls are still there. When one is hemmed in on all sides against one's will, it is a prison.

[He raises an eyebrow.] You don't look particularly ancient for a mortal, but I shall take your word for it.

Please do. [ she plays. ] I'm positively archaic.

[ it's one of those harmless, obvious lies. the sort that doesn't even try to masquerade as the truth -- delivered with a sardonic smile. ]

You've a bit of dust on your hair, that was how I could tell.

Gee, I knew I forgot to vacuum something this morning. [ ah well. in for a pound... ] Kate, by the way. Kate Bishop.

Lovely to meet you, Lady Bishop. [He's learned to play the polite game with humans when it suits him.] I am Loki, son of Frigga.

Just Kate, please. [ is it possible his face is even more punch-able when he's trying to be polite? except as soon as she thinks so, she realizes how much she misses the team. ]

As you like, Kate.

[ actually! that's a well-won battle all in itself. how refreshing, to be just kate when it comes to any version of loki. it puts her that little bit more at ease.

which means she wants to go ahead and stir the pot. juuuuust a bit. she smiles. ] Or Hawkeye. If you like.

[Sip of wine. Not so much as a blink. Completely deadpan:] You're much more comely than the other Hawkeye.

Hell yeah I am.

[ -- and she's pretty sure the other hawkeye would be having a mental breakdown right now if he knew she was sitting here grinning at any version of loki. ]

And you seem to have a better sense of humor.

[ loki's not wrong, necessarily. but kate does feel bad spending too much of her energy tarnishing her fellow hawkeye too much. ]

It helps to have a little less baggage, I guess. [ because she's just as young as he first guessed -- not immortal at all, and certainly not accustomed to nursing homes. prisons, on the other hand... ]

I tend to find, the more horrors one lives through, the more there is to laugh at.

[Because, you know. The other option is screaming and never stopping. At least that's how he's found it to be.]

Sure, I guess. But I said baggage. Horrors are something completely different to the socially deficient disasters Clint tends to walk himself straight into. Just saying.

I wasn't aware of that side of him. [...well, different Clints.]

[ -- yep, definitely a different loki. not that kate is all too familiar with clint's past dealings with this particular asguardian. ]

Most here don't seem to be. It's okay. Sounds like the other version is about sixty percent more responsible.

Perhaps it is the influence of being a family man. [Huh. Maybe?]

So I hear. [ -- the black widow told her about the family thing. interesting development, but not all that impossible to believe. after all, kate's clint was once married. ] Give him time. He'll catch up.

Perhaps. Though I think he picked his lady too carefully for that.
