[Kitty was not expecting a surprise birthday party because while it is the date of her birth, her last birthday was about seven months ago because abductions that can happen from any time make things weird. And then there's also the part where Winn got attacked by Sascha and she and Winn had their first significant fight and things have been on the rough side. Of course, with people like Winn and Pinkie Pie in her life she really should have known better.

So, here we are on The Tourist with dancing in the cargo hold. Winn's phone is playing mustic amplified by Cisco's speakers. There are snacks, beverages, and cake in the kitchen. With Pinkie Pie helping out and some of the stores of food they built up from the time on the hand holding planet you can expect better-than-spacefood quality. And if you need more privacy, Winn opened his room up, but he did include a sign that says no making out complete with a disappointed frowny face, so you would never! Probably.

Enjoy the party! Kitty is turning 20 years and 7 months today? Yeah, there may be another birthday party for her coming up. She's probably doomed to have two per year. Of course you have to get gifts for both!]

He's sweet and very smart. He's been working on projects with Hank. [The door to Winn's room is open with signs he wrote telling people not to make out. Embarrassing much, boyfriend? Kitty heads inside and plucks a framed photo off the dresser to hand to him—a photo of a man and a woman.]

My parents. The one the tree gave me.

[grandstanding]

[He nods, her comment ringing a bell. Probably Hank has mentioned the man once or twice. When she hands him the photo, he goes quiet, knowing what it must be before she confirms it. He brushes his thumb against the frame, taking in the details.]

Sure. [She'll take it back when he's done.] I never found it back home. Anything really. It was a long time before I could go back to the house. It had been leveled in the culling.

[grandstanding]

Mm. I'm glad you got it back here. [He folds his arms and leans against the wall.] The only reason I found mine is because we buried some things before being forced out. [It still sparks a forlorn feeling in him, the memory of going back to where his family's home had been. It had only reminded him that home was long dead.]

Smart. And...terrible. It all felt like it happened so fast for me. Just a stupid kid absorbed in dancing and school, not paying enough attention to the danger happening. Like it didn't affect me. [It had bothered her even then before she knew she was a mutant. She didn't like hearing anyone putting anyone else down. But looking back now with older eyes it just feels like such a pathetically small awareness and effort.]

[grandstanding]

Don't regret your innocence, Kitty.

[She looks at him thoughtfully. The way he says that gets her to reevaluate. Also, just being Erik helps a lot.] ...Yeah. I guess a thirteen year old probably wasn't going to change the course of the war and save everyone.

[grandstanding]

It's a monumental thing, even for an adult. [Goodness knows he's failed to change things the way he wanted to, with his acts.]

Tell me about it. [She sighs before tilting her head and managing a smile. It's not even that hard. They go to these sad, dark places and it's a little cathartic and bonding rather than really bringing her down. She hopes he feels that way too. She'd be sad if he wanted to avoid her. But he did come to her birthday party so far so good!]

We should get back to that party of mine. Someone owes me an ancient style of dance.

[grandstanding]

[He smiles at that.] Ballroom or waltz?

Oh, waltz. It sounds extra fancy somehow. Should I be wearing a top hat?

If only. Maybe someone will think to get me one as a gift as the party goes on. [Not that she's expecting more guests. She wasn't expecting all the ones she got.]
