To The Fleet

[Tyrion is looking a little ... frazzled today. He's as neat as always, but his expression sort of has the range of 'shit shit shit shit shit' on it. Still, he kept a very straight face and a pleasant tone as he speaks.] Just to let everyone know, Captain Furiosa appears to be ... missing. Altogether. I will be stepping up as First Mate with Captain duties until she returns.

[Please, please let her return soon. Tyrion was always leery of leadership positions. He preferred to be the voice behind the throne.]

So, any questions, problems, captain meetings that should be attended? Let me know.

Well. All right. I'm in charge. So ... keep doing what you were doing before. all right?

[He smiled tightly.] And we'll just keep on as always until she returns. Good. Status, ah, reports?

It's not just you - you have friends who'll help. And maybe - look at it this way - command is a lot more lax here. I mean, what are your actual duties as captain?

[ maybe tackling a list will make them less intimidating, is his thought here. ]

I am not entirely sure - I have not asked another Captain.

[He pressed his lips together.] The question is not if they are lax now. It is if they are going to continue to be so.

Yeah -- but try to start with what's in front of you now. You know, when we started out on the Tourist, we were all a little too - individual - to really follow commands. But Jim, he won us over, he took the time to show us that he really cares about us as people, not just as crew members and - now when something happens like when we discovered those devices - it's just sort of second nature to follow his orders.

[He rubbed his beard thoughtfully at that, before he sighed.] I am not entirely certain how I would do that. Well, besides win over hearts and minds.

I think that's pretty much it. That's leadership in a nutshell, getting people to trust you. I mean, you already did the advising part, right? You know how to operate under pressure.

Well yes. It's basically just being smarter than everyone else in the room. Getting people to trust me - ah - might be slightly more difficult.

I don't think it's so much about being smarter than everyone else - it's being good with strategy and knowing how to motivate people. Just throwing it out there, but telling people that being smarter than them is the easy part - probably not gonna get you there.

I have found that threats are particularly motivating. Although, I will grant you, that is my father's way. Beyond that, everyone already knows how intelligent I am. The only way I have ever motivated people was to point out we would either fight or die. So they preferred to fight.

But you aren't your father and you don't want to be, so let's not use him as an example for anything. Things are different here than they are back home - you're a smart guy, you can figure out how to motivate people before it gets so dire. Try bonding with them, I'm telling you - worked wonders for Jim. I went from being angry at him for meddling to seeking him out when something happens.

Bonding with them. [Aaaah.] Like throwing them some sort of banquet?

Ah, a party can be a bonding experience, sure. But just - try to talk to them, like you did with me. You know, let them know you care about what's happening to them, and that you're here to listen if they need it.

I see ... then for the most part, I should be fine. I already have arrangements like that with most of the crew.

I'm sure you will be, you know how to get people's attention, and that's like half the job right there.

[ says the guy whose only leadership experience is online. at least he accompanies it with an encouraging smile? ]

Dare I ask what the other half of the job is? I hope you do not say heroics. I have had mixed luck with those.

Nah, heroics is what we have a hoard of superheroes around for.

[ nodding. ]

An actual leader could probably give you a better answer to that.

Well, I cannot deny that. I want more super heroes.

[He chuckled softly.]

Well I guess I should find one ...
