If anyone can see this transmission, my name is Rey and I was just - [Meeting a cloaked Jedi. No big deal.] It doesn't matter. I'm looking for the Millennium Falcon and a tall Wookiee named Chewbacca.

[Unless she has been kidnapped by the First Order again.]

This ship is called the Marsiva, isn't it? It...wouldn't happen to be owned by the First Order, would it?

Do you really expect those in power to be completely honest? Even in the Republic it doesn't work like that.

I have no doubt Palpatine was ambitious and enjoyed the power he wielded but at the same time he was the strong leader the galaxy the needed after the Republic crumbled.

And say what you will about him being a Sith, he was able to do a great deal to help star systems recover from the Clone Wars, re-establish secure routes to the Outer Rim, and ensured Imperial citizens could depend on that stability.

[He has to admire Palpatine for doing that, it was honestly one of the few good things the Empire had actually done.

Faults like being Darth Vader and the Emperor's enforcer? He's not going to point that out though.]

I don't expect full honesty - though it would be nice - but for someone to be a Sith Lord and not tell anyone... That's a problem.

[She rubs her forehead with the heel of her hand.]

Others could have stepped up in his place. He either saw them killed, no doubt, or silenced them through other means.

[A Sith Lord doesn't have empathy or understanding. How does that equal a good ruler?]

You admire him. [Gross.]

You may want to remember that when you join the Resistance if you look up to Leia Organa at all.

[He doubted she knew the truth about General Organa if she didn't make the Vader connection.]

Perhaps but no one else was Palpatine. It could be because he was a Sith Lord but even as Chancellor Palpatine had a unique ability to unite star systems and create a unified system people could depend on.

[He paused at the question, thoughtfully.]

It some ways, yes. He wasn't perfect, he did make several critical mistakes but he was one of a kind and I can't think of anyone who could have done what he did whether good or bad.

[Many in the First Order practically worshiped the Emperor but Hux wasn't one of them.]

She has been nothing but kind and supportive. What secrets she keeps to herself, I trust she has a good reason. A healthy reason. [She amends. Not a self-serving reason.]

You're really backwards in your thinking, General. [It's sad and tiring.] If the base is corrupted, anything built on that base is corrupted too. It would be like me building a ship by beginning with two faulty wires. The ship might do some great things, but eventually those wires are going to fail.

She is her father's daughter. I'm sure she thinks she has a good reason for lying to the Senate and the Republic though.

[Yeah he went there, he had been involved indirectly in that information coming out in the first place.]

The Empire was more than Palpatine though, bigger than even one Sith Lord as powerful as he was.

She is a good woman. You don't even know her. [Rey sincerely wishes there was someone who could give her a full run down of history.]

And built on corruption.

I'm just curious but I have to ask- what do you think day to day life was like for Imperial citizens then? Do you think everyone down the to local administrators were corrupt as well?

I wouldn't expect you to like your enemy.

[She's probably in for a lot more than he can offer.]

I don't know. There might have been some good people mixed in who were unaware of Palpatine's true nature...

Naturally. I doubt Organa has a warm regard for me either.

[He really doesn't take it personally, he's sure a great chunk of the galaxy would love to have his head for various reasons on either side of the conflict.]

Living under the Empire wasn't as dramatic as the Resistance and Rebellion made it out to seem for the most part. Most of the regional governors didn't get up in the morning wondering how they could oppress the masses that day.

She has a great heart; you might be surprised to know what she thinks of you.

[Leia isn't like that, though considering the First Order is part of the reason her son is so awol...

It doesn't matter what they thought! The one they followed - the one they trusted and who gave orders - was as bad as it gets.

You should ask her sometime.

[He doubts Leia is truly going to be moved by her great heart when it comes to him but it's not something he loses sleep over.]

You have such a simplistic view of the Empire and the Republic. It's not entirely cut and dry as you seem to think it is.

I would if she were here.

[If he was Snoke, it might be a different story. Though Hux has likely earned her wrath for what the First Order has done. Rey is pretty sickened by all of it.]
