yo, blameless: ship dinner, tonight at 7ish? i think i sourced just enough on the last brace of planets to actually throw together something similar to street food-y pad thai. last one to the table has to help me with the dishes.

[ kate's in and out of the kitchen all day, fussing with food prep. there are veggies to be peeled and fried. noodles to be cooked. tallbird meat to be thawed. protein powders to whisk together. plus, the kitchen is also simply a social space -- a place to kick back with a drink and catch up with crewmates she might not ordinarily speak to on a regular basis. but if you show your face, don't be surprised if she suddenly expects you to lend a hand. ]

CARGO HOLD

[ throughout the month, the most reliable place to find kate (besides her bunk) is in the sparse corner of the hold where the gym equipment hangs out. lately, she's been working with the free-weights. intent to keep her arm and upper-back muscles strong, she's been putting herself through a fairly tough regimen. one arm had been in a sling for a while, and she has lost ground to regain.

however, if you catch her late at night, you might witness her painting a bullseye with white and purple rings. ]

[Hank wanders into the kitchen about an hour before dinner, figuring that if she's going all out for dinner, she might need some help. He's no cook, but he can at least do whatever else she needs him to do]

It smells good in here. Need some help?

[ oh so stoically: ] You any good at crushing nuts?

[oh my god Kate]

I'd say so.

Perfect. You're just what I need.

[ she hands him a bag of loose peanuts and a rolling pin. you know what you must do. ]

I knew my strength would come in handy one day.

[he moves to somewhere to work, briefly leaving things there so he can wash his hands]

I'm saving mine for the gym. [ and for other nuts to crush, admittedly. ] Plus, it feels great to have a sous-chef from time to time. Someone to boss around.

Is it really bossing me around if I'm a willing participant?

[he chuckles to himself, and moves back over to the nuts and the rolling pin, setting them out] What are these going to be for?

Not that I can remember, no.

It's a little like a noodle stir-fry. Or...a lot like a noodle stir-fry. Kinda sweet. Kinda spicy. Topped best with chopped nuts and a squeeze of lime. [ ... ] But who has the patience to chop nuts? Might as well just bash'em instead.

[beathach]

Huh. I've had stir fry, but nothing like that.

[a snort] I could chop them if you need me to.

[ He surveys the chaos of the kitchen with a faint smile. ]

None, really. [ ...a hapless smile while she scrubs a spoon. ] Just wanted to do something for us.

Nah. Bashing's gotta be more fun.

[ is she smirking? maybe. ]

More fun, sure, but probably messier.

But you're the boss, I'll bash them if you want me to.

That's a lovely sentiment. It does feel as if we've drifted apart a little.

I don't know about everyone else, but the cycles get to me. We spend so long cooped up on the ships that whenever we land somewhere, I wanna be anywhere but here. Which means we spend less time together. Which means there's a bit of an effort to reconnect once we're on the move again.

[ladybro]

And I want you to. [ a beat, she keeps doing what she's doing -- then: ] How've you been?

[ah, that question. He hums a little, shrugging a shoulder]

You mean, aside from the extra ten years? I'm alright. Settled, now that things have . . . calmed down.

What about you? How's your arm doing?

There's definitely that aspect to it. The Fleet keeps changing as well.
