(There is a tall Elf amongst the wreckage, a gun at his side. His eyes are unfocused and there is a strain to his features as if he is listening to something hard to distinguish.)

I do not like the Song of this world. Have others noticed it? (Elven ears are sensitive to such things and this Song is one of...calling? Summoning?

It wishes to keep us. The thought comes unprovoked and his grip tightens on his gun.)

I would not spend overlong looking amongst the wreckage. I cannot say if it is possible for you to forget you are part of the fleet, but -

(It is not impossible and that concerns him. Leaving anyone behind brings back bad memories.)

I stand ready to guard anyone who wishes to explore, however. Tell me of your arrival and I will meet you.

I do not like it. (He has not moved, which may not speak well for his current mental state.) I should stay.

{Fingon's lips thin and he breaks into a run. He doesn't like those signs.}

Then I will stand with you.

Can you hear it? (He tilts his head, eyes darkening.) It is in the distance, watching.

(Like Morgoth. Like Sauron.)

{Fingon's heart lurches and a minute later he breaks into the clearing, but keeps running until he reaches his cousin. He reaches to tug on Maedhros' remaining hand, demanding his attention.}

We have ever been watched. Here is no different. Are you to let it win?

(The tugging gets his attention and his eyes focus on Fingon's face. His cousin. He remembers.)

How do I triumph? (He doesn't know. Should he stay and protect those who come, unaware, or go and save himself this discomfort?)

{Fingon smiles encouragement, concern clear in his gaze.}

By staying with those who love you. By remembering who you are, and that you do not kneel before the Enemy. If you must stay here, you will not be alone.

(Those last words snap his tether with the strange voice. He frowns openly at Fingon and gives his fiery head a shake.)

No. We must return. (Licking dry lips, he looks around, pale.) Do you know if toron came?

{A sharp intake of breath and Fingon looks quickly around for Maglor.}

I have not seen him. Anatar and I were heading back when you called. If Kano is here too we will not leave without him.

Stay with me, please, cousin. (Maedhros grips onto Fingon's arm briefly.) He will be susceptible too. More so than I.

I will not leave you here. Neither of you. {Fingon catches the hand up and squeezes it in reassurance.} I will keep the Shadows away.

(His hand shakes, but he controls it.) You came for me again. How shall I ever repay you?

{The smile is unforced.} I will always come for you. You can never hide from me, even by accident. I know you would do the same for me, that is payment enough.

Yes, but I never have a chance, Finno. You are too strong to fall prey to any Darkness! (A comfort and a frustration considering he wants to be heroic for his cousin.) Come, let us search for him.

No? {Fond.} You don't even realize when you save me. {For Maedhros keeps the Shadow away just by being near.}

Yes. {Fingon keeps hold of his cousin's hand, knowing Maedhros needs the reminder not to fall, and chooses a random direction to begin.}

I shall never. (Perhaps that is better, he thinks. It keeps him vigilant. It keeps him humble.)

He may resist. Let me carry him if need be. (Maglor would never forgive himself for injuring Fingon.)

{Fingon only smiles gently, deciding for now to let Maedhros be ignorant of just how much he helps.}

...If it comes to it, I will order him to come with us. {Though it brings him no joy. If it keeps his cousin safe, he will do it.}

He will abide by your order. (Maedhros knows he and Kano are too alike to take orders from each other. But Fingon is different - he is apart from them. Different.)

Be stern if you must and know you are doing him good.

I know. I will do what must be done to get you both safely away from here. {Fingon hates ordering his family, even for their own good. He didn't want to be High King, but there had been no other choice and he was needed. He's still needed.}

I hope he won't need to be carried.

He will thank you later. (For a moment, he smoothes over Fingon's hair affectionately.) You are our valiant cousin and we have sore need of you.

Even if it hurts him? {Fingon leans into the affection, worry fading somewhat.} I need you both too.

Pain is part of our lives. I will not let him stay on a planet that has such a large Shadow. (He rests their heads together.) You have us.

I know it is. {A sigh. Fingon leans against his cousin, grateful for the support.} I do not want to add to it any more than I have to. There is already too much pain and sorrow.

You never add to it. (He says that with all the certainty in this world or any other.) It is my duty to protect your light.

(He draws Fingon towards the trees.)

{Fingon has to believe Maedhros - his cousin wouldn't lie to him. He smiles softly.} You do well. I am glad we are all here, if not on this planet.

{He follows where guided, searching for signs of Maglor.}

(Fingon is his light. Not once has he added to Maedhros's pain. Except for once, but that had not been his dear cousin's fault.)

I did not envision myself surrounded by family again. I will take all the oddities of space to keep you, Grandfather, Ingoldo and Kano near.

(He touches a tree with the palm of his hand.)
