[Sam's very much subdued the day that Dean vanishes. If he reacts more viscerally to it, to knowing that this Dean was returning to his inevitable death at Sam and satan's own hands, nobody'd know it — he closes himself up in his room, keeps himself distant for a little while. It helps, because it also gets him away from those damned echoes that have begun to snowball. He's tried his best to ignore them, and with Dean suddenly gone... he doesn't trust himself to be anything but stressed at the sight.

Anyway. Um. Best to move forward, right...? Get back into things. Working at the bar keeps his mind busy, as does helping with the garden, and there's also helping with the weird messages from the planet, and — dammit, Sam, get back into things. Fake it 'til you make it. This too shall pass, if you pretend hard enough that you're fine. So he breathes in deep, breathes out, and addresses the fleet.]

My brother, Dean, um. Dean Winchester's left the fleet. I wasn't sure how many people knew him, but...

[A pause.]

Anyone want to talk? I could use something to keep me occupied. Your choice of topic, just shoot. I can be a pretty good listener, too.

[Help me get out of this funk, huh.]

Sam... [She's sorry. Does it ever help to hear it? Maybe, but we won't find out just yet at least.]

[She wouldn't have minded getting to know Dean better herself. Can't really count on people to stick around in these places.]

[She surprises him so much with that comment, he coughs a laugh.]

Wow. I don't usually start a topic so abruptly, but hey.

That would be nice. Don't want to get scurvy. It's also hard to make a screwdriver without it.

Last place I was in, not so lucky.

My prison was all about having bars—weirdly enough it was the kind with alcohol not the kind I walk through while rolling my eyes. Your last place sounds like the worst.

It wasn't... Well, no, it was pretty bad.

There were some strong godlike beings who enjoyed being pains in the ass. Things got particularly bad when one of the gods decided the best way to unite everyone would be by killing them and trapping their souls in eternal torment inside it.

It does feel like eternal torment tends to up the ante. [At least people just died back where she's from. Home. Not prison. They came back from death there.]

It sure the hell did. Luckily everyone left came together and worked on getting into the place of this eternal torment — resurrected those trapped and destroyed it from the inside out.

It was... really great, to leave a place and know it was safe and livable again.

Like you made a difference? That always sounds nice in theory. I wondered what it might be like in practice. [Kidding. Sort of...]

Yeah — but, um, not just me. Everyone did something. Hell, they did more than me, even. I just spitballed ideas. [He mostly died trying to convince a highly powered being to help them fight back. On the bright side, the being did decide to. He isn't sure if he actually did any good there, but any little thing works for him.] But we also managed to take the spirit apart from the inside out by working together, too.

You never know. Maybe we'll figure this place out, too.

That's true. That was my hope in the prison, but it felt like we never even got close and then I was here. Doesn't mean the work stopped without me though.

That's true. Maybe you can find a way to check on them again.

When I left Adstringendum, I was able to jump between worlds thanks to the powers that be. I can't do that here, obviously, but it's something to think about.

If Winn and I can find a way to jump worlds we're going to try to get to the prison and free them too. [It's a damn big "if" and she knows it.]

What was this powers that be jumping?

I wish I could say how it works. It looks like a normal communications device to me, and I've studied the damn thing up and down. In the end, I think the best way to get these sorts of things to work is to take advantage of what other rules universes have.

People fall into them with a lot of different abilities and powers.

For us, the magic the spirits possessed is what sealed our escape.

They weren't limited when they got there? People here and back in the prison had some power reductions. At least some people did. [She can't really say hers took a hit, but people who can jump from universe to universe definitely would.]

Some reductions, yeah. But those losses in power were potentially because of the spirits.

[At least that's what he gleamed from his time there.]

Some managed to get by with more than others. One girl had the power to convert chaotic energy into a food source - we jumped a few loopholes, utilized someone else's powers, and managed to create a huge power source that helped deconstruct one of the spirits.

Hmm. [Considering that.]

Do you think we're working with magic here with the Atroma? My guess would be technology. [This is slightly primed by her being into science and while she allows for magic she considers it a form of science that just isn't well understood.] Either way there are ways of dealing with it. Might help if we had a target though.

It's entirely possible. I mean, technology does make sense, but...

Considering the planets we've visited, it's completely possible they're magic-based, or supernatural, or whatever it could be classified as. Nothing seems to be set in stone; I mean, anything could have a scientific explanation, but... it also could not.

Anything that could answer our questions is on the Marsiva, as far as I can tell.

Hmm...I'll grant you feeling someone's emotions because I'm holding their hand isn't exactly something I could get at Best Buy. [Does he know that reference?] It does seem like a mustant power to me, but unless they were altering our DNA and then putting it back that doesn't track either.

It's a weird mish-mash I don't think we've even begun to understand, even with the augments.

Yeah, the augments. We'd be fighting with something in hour heads that can control our bodies, emotions, and thoughts. Piece of cake. [Funny how they got on this topic at all when she called to comfort him about Dean leaving. Sometimes distraction is helpful?]

I don't think I'd want to bet against that. I assumed they were too. I'm less sure about the reasoning. Ratings? Testing us? Manipulating us?

Probably all of the above.

It just sucks that there's no real way of finding answers yet.

You can say that again. Just don't actually say that again. Too corny. [She gives him a little smile. And what is she talking about? She not-so-secretly loves corny. She just wanted to end on a lighter note. Might as well keep things as light as she can for him under the circumstances. Not that talking about why their mysterious overlords do what they do is light, but it beats talking about losing your brother.]
