[ Hello, fleet! Today you get a message from someone who's been more than a little absent the past month. Some people may be more aware of it than others, but he's finally crawling out of the woodwork.

Waking up has been more than a little disorienting, because he didn't recall falling asleep, or when. It makes him uneasy, a solid weight sitting in his gut. The last time he couldn't remember things, it wasn't so great for the fleet. ]

What year is it?

Not sure how long I was out..Is everyone okay?

[ He can't say he's surprised that nothing new has come about on Steve's side. He doesn't know if he even wants that for him. It's.. not a good time for anyone involved.

He's the reason that things went so pear-shaped for Steve in the first place. ]

Is it?

[ so far, everyone who has gotten new memories were left scarred by them. whatever the fine details were, the memories left them upset, changed and distanced. it's a distance he can't seem to cross, he can't reach them when he's like this. ]

I can't understand. I know it isn't helping.

[ you. ]

[ Steve doesn't need to cross that bridge right now. There are enough of them now that remember, adding one more volatile piece will only stoke the fire. Steve stands more to lose than he does. ]

You don't need to understand. There's no helping what you haven't been through, right?

No, there isn't.

[ and that's equally as frustrating. even if they could come to understandings here, it wouldn't matter. what's about to happen will happen. while steve always believed one can shape the future, this is a painful exception to the rule. ]

Everybody else remembers. I can't help but feeling the Atroma are going somewhere with leaving me out of the loop.

[ He huffs, and it sounds a little bitter to his own ear. ]

Now you know how I felt. Before-- when you were here. You'd just gone up against Ultron. I still didn't know how DC ended. The last thing I remembered was seeing you on the bridge, then nothing.

[ So really, he understands the frustration.. but Steve had told him how things turn out, which had eased his mind a bit. This is a little different, though. ]

I'm sorry about that.

[ in his - what? relief? enthusiasm? at seeing him again, he may have not have understood it, not like this - what bucky had felt. ]

All I could focus about was that I finally found you.

It's fine, I dealt with it. Not like I remembered much of anything, anyway. So this? Remembering things? It's kind of a new concept for me. I was here an entire year and only remembered a handful of things.

[ The man he is here vastly overshadows the one he is back home. His connections in the fleet are things he's built for himself. ]

My point is. Don't try to move shit forward. Just let it play out as it needs to, because it will.

No matter what I do.

[ he echoes the thought with a grim nod that is replaced by a small smile a moment later. ]

Look at you, being the mature one. Gotta be a first.

I'm not the same guy you remember.

[ He's definitely seen it for himself here, but it feels like Steve needs some sort of reminding. Bucky's managed to make himself into his own person over the past year, plus the ones at home. ]

Same goes for you. We've both changed.

[ he agrees but the smile lingers. it seems he can finally understand it, the situation at hand. none of them are the people they were before the war. but he is not the winter soldier, either. rather, someone new entirely and still, very familiar. still, he carries a strong sense of home. ]

I heard that can happen in our old age.

[ change. ]

A lot of things happen in old age.

[ He's grateful for the change, if he's honest. Bucky would feel out of sorts if he was the only one that had changed. Like watching pictures frozen in time. It still feels like that sometimes, though now they're fewer and far between. ]

I think I'm starting to see a little grey just there. [ He gestures to Steve's temple. Obviously they're not, but how often does he get to poke fun at his best friend's expense? ]

You might need to check that eyesight of yours. Could be needing glasses.

[ old men sassing one another, it's a thing. ]

My eyesight's top-notch, pal.

Sure about that? I mean if it's not, it might explain the hair.

[ behold, two men nearing 100 who act like 6 year olds. ]

[ Reluctantly, ] It is getting a little long.

[ He definitely doesn't want to cut it shorter again just yet. ]

You like it this way?

[ despite the earlier jibe, there's no true judgement here. if anything, he seems genuinely interested even in these little details. ]

I cut it short once before. When Jim was here. Took forever to grow back. I like this a little better.

[ He shrugs. ] I may change my mind, but for now, I want to keep it.

Yeah.

[ there's a moment when it's all still a-ok but then steve reaches out and ruffles that hair with a chuckle. ]

Seems like a good idea.

[ He huffs, pushing at Steve's shoulder. ] You're such a punk.
