[Yuan smirks wryly at him. It's a bit of a relief to see someone here who he's spoken to and didn't part on bad terms.]

That's right. 'The Four Seraphim' was the name my friends and I took for ourselves when we froze our metabolisms to keep from aging. ...It's a long story.

You... froze your metabolism?

[He doesn't sound at all deterred by the "long story" bit.]

That's right. [He's tempted to leave it at that - if you're going to talk to long-lived people, you'd better get used to them not wanting to talk about stuff.

But Mikleo was patient with him before, so he relents and elaborates.] ...We had a problem to fix that would take hundreds of years before the solution would be available. None of us wanted to spend half our lives waiting for it, and one of us was human and wouldn't have survived that long in the first place. Stopping our aging while we worked toward a resolution seemed like a good idea at the time.

[Huh. That's unexpected, but... interesting.]

You said the human wouldn't have survived... does that mean your kind are normally long-lived anyway?

[cloakand_danger]

That's right; elves and half-elves normally live somewhere around a thousand years. [A bitter smirk.] Not that half-elves usually reach the end of their natural lifespan, but we can live as long as elves, in theory.

[nerdeology]

"In theory"... that sounds ominous.

[It would probably be callous to ask.

[Fortunately for Mikleo, that's one Yuan's willing enough to answer without further prompting.]

My world isn't a gentle one - especially not to people caught between two societies. For someone who is neither elven nor human...well, the lucky ones will manage to keep their heads down and live in human cities. If they keep to themselves and don't talk back too much, they might be able to get along.

[I bet you can guess which of these things Yuan fails at most consistently.]

[Though Mikleo doesn't know Yuan that well, he can guess. He got into a spat with Dezel; admittedly that isn't hard, but it also means he doesn't just sit by and take it.]

I'm sorry to hear that. It seems like no matter the world, someone or some group of people ends up suffering needlessly for stupid reasons.

It is what it is. Right now, there are more people than ever working to change it, at least. Hopefully something will come of that.

I hope so, as well. It's hard to change the world when you're the only one who wants to bother, so I'm glad there are more getting involved.
