[ a video feed flickers to life, and fights for a moment to adequately focus on its subject. peggy carter sits in the kitchen aboard the starstruck, cup of tea and her elbow and half a biscuit in her hand. dabbing at crumbs, she sets her food aside and offers the network a bright smile. ]

That message -- the ominous one, in the bizarre language? It put me in mind of the sort of cryptograms and puzzles you might see in the Sunday paper. [ her expression is cheery enough, although she's not being wholly honest about her interest in such games. she won't be the one to say the words bletchley and park.] I loved them. Them, and crosswords. I thought maybe some of you might like them, too. [ ... ] We could do a few together. I'm not saying we all join a club, exactly, but back home they were always better solved in good company.

Let's start you off with one that's easy enough. But there's no shame in needing a hint, if needed. For what it's worth, the text I'm attaching is, in its deciphered form, English -- not yet certain how the augments' translation will handle it. We'll see.

Maybe. One of the nice things about being an assistant, though, is you're practically invisible.

I get my work done and I stay out of the way, so that if something "comes up" during the day, it's not a huge deal if I'm nowhere to be found, you know?

-- And your employer hasn't noticed?

Oh, she's fired me like three times. But she never really means it.

Careful, now, before you make her sound toothless.

It's definitely the opposite. She is tooth...ful? Full of teeth. But I am pretty good at being her assistant— definitely the record holder for the job.

Despite the distractions? Impressive.

It's more about perseverance than anything else.

How many hours of sleep do you get, hm? [ though peggy supposes she may not even need sleep. ]

I don't really need as much sleep as humans do.

I sort of thought not. [ a brief smile. ] Tends to be the case, I've noticed, among some of the more powered people.

It's our burden.

You know, I've never much envied powers. I get by how I am, and I'm happy to do so -- but I think do covet the ability to skip out on a few hours abed.

I'm pretty sure that's what coffee is for.

[ oh so dryly: ] You as well? Bugger.

Tea just doesn't pack the same caffeine punch.

Some might spin that as a benefit.

Then those people get enough sleep at night.

[ a bark of laughter. genuinely meant, however sharp. ]

I assure you, I rarely do. [ ... ] But I suspect this is mostly one of those other side of the pond differences. For the most part.

[ let's not discuss the french, nor the italians, right now. ]

Probably. California is way across the pond.

Indeed. Nearly as far away again from New York as England is.

Do you miss England?

Often. [ more often now, indeed, than when she lived in new york. funny how that worked. ] Or I miss it in pieces, perhaps, more so than its larger presence.

That makes sense to me. I guess if you really missed it, you could always go back.
