{Fingon has been spending most of his time not cooking or baking, or with his cousins, with his grandfather. Finwë hasn't been awake in a painful amount of time for an Elf, and Fingon's done his best to keep calm and keep watch over him. Mostly braiding his grandfather's hair, sewing, singing or playing his harp - the latter he makes sure to stay quiet, to avoid disturbing those sleeping or otherwise resting.

As the time has dragged on though, he's growing more and more concerned and has to speak up.}

Is it common for people to fall asleep and not wake, regardless of what is done to try and wake them?

[Ah-- this she can help with, having gone through the same stress.]

Not common, but it does happen. They call it cryosleep here. Whoever is it will wake up again eventually.

{Fingon has one small braid in a hand, fiddling with it. The answer is a ray of hope and he has a small smile for her.}

Thank you. Is there no time limit to this cryosleep? It has been weeks...

Cryosleep can last from anywhere from a day or two to months. Sorry. [She smiles back, sympathetically.] The longest I've heard is two months. But it's usually nowhere near that long.

...if it helps, they're in perfect health. They might just feel a little disoriented when they wake up.

That does help. {Fingon's smile strengthens.} Hopefully grandfather will wake soon!

Your grandfather, huh? You're pretty lucky to have family here. Or-- [Her smile is rueful.] Well, maybe unlucky. Depends on your point of view.

I am! I have three other relatives here, aside from grandfather. {Oh so wry.} The alternative has me feel fortunate.

[Blink.]

That's-- that's a lot of people from the same family. The Atroma must really think you're interesting.

{The Elf flushes faintly and ducks his head, though he finds a smile for her.}

Interesting would be one way to describe us.

Well, I won't pry. [At least not while he's worried about family, anyway.]

...I should warn you, sometimes people who go into cryosleep wake up with new memories. As if they've been home.

{How kind! Fingon will happily answer questions.

The flush fades, replaced with rapid paling and he looks down, clearly concerned.}

...I hope that will not happen this time. {His grandfather needs to live! Even if it's only a brief respite.}

[...oh dear.]

No matter what happens at home, though, he will come back. Healthy and in one piece.

{Fingon draws in a steadying breath and looks back to her with a grateful little smile.}

Thank you. I appreciate your kind words.

(The door will open and Maedhros will duck into the room, holding two mugs of steaming tea. His blue gaze passes over Finwë, assuring himself that the Elf is only sleeping before he joins his cousin in his vigil.)

Here, Finno. (He holds out a mug.) Are you hungry?

{Fingon accepts the mug with a soft hum and holds it close with both hands.}

Thank you, Maitimo. I ate before coming here, but if you are hungry, I would not mind keeping you company.

(He sits at Fingon's side, sipping on his tea.)

I will cook for you if...you do not mind. Later. (His cheeks burn.) Do his dreams seem good?

(Maedhros reaches out to stroke over their grandfather's hair.)

{Fingon ducks his head as he leans against his cousin.}

That would be nice. {He smiles, taking a sip.}

I believe so. He does not seem distressed, only asleep.

(He shifts and offers his shoulder to Fingon, resting his cheek against the top of his head.)

I cannot promise it will be good. (Cooking is an art and he knows he isn't quite suited to it.)

May his dreams be pleasant, then. (He squeezes Finwë's hand.) We can go a long while without food. Do not worry overmuch for him, Finno.

{Fingon is quick to relax against him, hiding a fond grin by taking a second sip.} You will do your best, Maitimo. That is all that matters to me.

{He looks to their grandfather.} I only...miss him.

Will you feel so forgiving after I poison you accidentally? (He attempts a lighter tone, warmed by how Fingon trusts in him. He will never feel he deserves it.)

Finno... (Maedhros gently turns Fingon so he is facing him.) I cannot imagine the burden on his shoulders, can you? His children and his grandchildren have always fought; always made horrible decisions. I fear all I have brought him is grief.

But you are different. When he wakes, I want you to smile for him.

If that happens, it is a good thing we are Elves! I would still not blame you. {Fingon refuses to have his spirits dampened so!

He's easily turned, his attention turns to Maedhros before he frowns.} Not always. We bring him grief, but also love. Do you not see how deeply he loves us all? He wants us to be happy and safe. When he wakes, we should both smile for him.

Will you do that for him with me?

For your kindness, I shall do my best to keep you well. (His smile is sweeter, but then he frowns lightly.)

I see it and it... (He cannot look at Fingon directly as he continues.) It reminds me of you. That sort of love warms me and I know I would be miserable without it, but it makes me sad too. I feel I have taken it for granted.

(Slowly, he nods.) I will try.

As you always have.

{There's a warm glow at Maedhros' comparison before it fades to concern. Fingon reaches to brush hair from his cousin's face.} You give us your love just as we give you ours. I feel this place has given us all a second chance, do you plan to throw it away?

I believe in you.

I must learn to live with what I have done. I cannot forget it and I haven't a clue how I would ever forgive myself. I see Kano struggling with that burden constantly. I wish I could lead him out of the Darkness instead of us depending so heavily on your Light...

On Grandfather's Light. (He leans into the touch and closes his eyes.) I need that. I need you and when Grandfather is awake, I know I shall feel better.

He is still not awake? [ Maglor slips into the room quietly to take his shift ]

Not yet. {Fingon considers the multiple braids in Finwë's hair a fair trade, and doesn't expect his grandfather to be upset about them. He's made sure they're neat and pretty!}

Are you trying to wake him up by pulling his hair. [ Maglor laughs softly to see the state of their grandfather's hair ]

I brought you supper - you should get some rest, Finno.

Braiding! Not pulling! {Fingon retorts with a quiet laugh.}

Thank you, Kano. I'm fine. I want to be here when he wakes.

Braiding means you have to pull a bit. [ Maglor points out, amused, before gentling ]

I know you do. But we do not know when he will wake, Finno. To wear yourself out in the care of him does neither of you any good.

I'm being careful though. {A feigned pout.}

I rest easier here. And I have kept doing my usual tasks.

I know. [ Maglor settles beside him and tugs fondly on one of his own braids ]

And therein lies my concern. You cannot be all things to all people, Finno. I am just as capable a cook as you, you know. And I am not asking you to leave! Only to rest. I do not wish to force you to bed.

{Fingon leans against his cousin, resting his head on Maglor's shoulder.}

I do rest. I admit to not leaving this ship as much as I have been, and that time is now spent here.

[ Gentle hands reach up to pet Fingon's hair gently ]

Not enough. Sleep, Finno. I will watch.

{A content little hum and Fingon snuggles closer, letting his eyes close under the gentle petting.}

If you are certain...

I am. And you know I am right.

[ Maglor smiles and laces sleep into his voice, humming lowly the lullabies of long ago ]

Rest, Finno. I am here. No harm will come to either of you.

{Cheater! Fingon smiles and curls against Maglor, really not even attempting to fight the music.}

Thank you. {He's always felt safe with Maedhros and Maglor.

And so is quickly asleep!}

[ Hey if it works... ]

You are welcome. [ Maglor's eyes are sad and gentle - that Fingon - that any of his cousins - should be able to trust him still, is always a marvel. But he sings for Fingon, winding gentle dreams for him as he sleeps ]

It is not common, but neither is it cause for panic. Such things do seem to happen from time to time. [And then, with worry in his voice:] He sleeps still, cousin?

{Fingon gently twirls a small braid from his grandfather's head, frowning faintly before he sighs, nodding.} I see. Yes, he still sleeps. Peacefully, thankfully.
