[ Kubo wakes up with a jerk, fumbling around before he realizes it's not dark. The fire isn't lit and — this wasn't the cave he grew up in. Groping around, Kubo felt the solid presence of his shamisen, the two strings intact and breathes a sigh of relief. Then he carefully slips off the bed, slinging it over his back. With his one eye, he looked around. And pinches himself. ]

Okay. Not dead. Where am I? This isn't the Heavens . . . is it?

[ He had been sure everything had been settled, but Kubo hadn't exactly had time to learn the exact nature of what lingers above. ]

Good that you call it the end of 'a' story, rather than the end of 'yours'. From what I've experienced, one ends and another one begins right after it- or sometimes right in the middle of it. Never really an end and that's it, right?

Only if it's being told.

[ Otherwise they'll fade away. Like what happened with his father. ]

But you're right. There is no end, not yet.

Hm well, I suppose those do need to end some time. People need to sleep and whatnot.

[He worked really hard for THAT much. ]

Is that what people hope for?

From what I've seen of people, yeah. It's generally important to them. Hope in general, actually.

I don't think hope is something I look forward to.

No? None at all? That's...rather unfortunate.

Your world isn't destroyed or anything, is it?

No, nothing like that.

I guess I'm not sure what to hope for.

Oh. Well, that's easy. You just take baby steps. Learn to hope for the small things first, before moving to the bigger ones.

Like, I dunno. Hope for a sunny day, or a certain meal you enjoy. Work up from there.

[ He nods. ]

People hope for sunny days?

Of course. People who like to sit in the sun. Gardeners, beach-goers. Those sorts.

What do they do there? Just . . . lie in the sun?

[ What is this free time. ]

Pretty much. It's absolute bliss.

[Kubo, let him tell you about his century long nap one day, okay. ]

I don't know how anyone has time for that.

You'd be surprised. They do it pretty regular. Take time from work for it and everything. They call them 'holidays'.

[ Kubo scrunches up his face as he tries to gather context clues. ]

I just don't see it. I've always had to work.

[It's okay, Kubo, Crowley will teach you all about breaks. They're the best. ]

Seriously? Well, that's just depressing. Next planet we get to that has a beach, you should give it a try.

[He doesn't care about the kid's wellbeing, nope. Just teaching him sloth, that's all. Absolutely. ]

It's not depressing. I like my work. I just didn't have much time to do anything else.

[ Between earning money and taking care of his mother, Kubo rarely had time for himself. Which is why he was at such a loss these days. ]

Just because you enjoy it doesn't mean you don't deserve a break every once in a while. That's the whole point.

What I've learned is what I deserve isn't always what I get.

[He recognises THAT. ]

Tell me about it. What I've learned is that sometimes you have to straight up take what you want. Obviously, not anything to hurt anyone or whatever, because that's just stupid, but something decent just for you? Absolutely worth reaching out and grabbing, no matter what anyone else says.

[ He's quiet for a few moments, letting his silence speak for him before he replies. ]

Even when you do that, it can be taken away. It's — just not that simple. And it's never going to be.

No, it's not simple. But even if it gets taken away, it doesn't mean you just...let it be that way. I mean, if you want something better, then give the universe the finger and go for it. They can only stop you so many times before they get bored and give up.

[ Kubo isn't sure what a finger has to do with anything. But he can't find it in himself to believe that. Twelve years of his mother living in a cave, staying away from the night. While Kubo himself hadn't lived in perpetual fear and paranoia, he knew his mother had. He knew her struggle. ]

You only have so many chances when you're human.

[One day, Crowley will teach him. ]

Well...yes. Mortality and all that. More reason to keep fighting for it, with the little time you have to exist in the world.
