[ every joint pops when kate bishop wakes up. for the first half hour, all she does is stay in her bunk and stare at the ceiling. what the futz just happened? she wrestles with the ringing ache in her head -- trying to pinpoint the last thing she remembers. was it winn's birthday party? was it venice beach? was it both? with a groan, she at long last sits up. gropes for her communications device.

and realizes just how long she's been out. futz and futz and futz again. ]

Hey, fleet. [ she sounds groggy. and (to those who know her) more than a little under the weather. her dark hair is piled up in a messy bun. she looks...tired. ] Ever have a week-long hangover before? Because what a shitty ability that would be. I've been out since New Year's. What'd I miss?

[ kate doesn't even change out of her pjs. she rolls into the blameless's kitchen and begins to rattle around the cupboards. she wants water -- actually, she wants coffee. but she doesn't have the patience even for the stove-top espresso maker. the feed catches all of it: her expression of dismay as she adjusts back to what a space-kitchen has to offer; her disgruntled yawn; the moment when she collects herself before sitting down and addressing the feed once again. ]

One more thing, actually. What do you do when you feel like you know too much?

What was it like? Waking up? [ ... ] Did you feel like someone had knocked you out with something heavy and blunt?

Nah. I felt kinda groggy, like I'd taken one too many sleep meds.

[Which, honestly, isn't something he's had to take since becoming immortal.]

I'll have to note that, though. I didn't realize there could be differences in waking up.

...Could've been the drinking. Maybe? [ she huffs. ] The last thing I remember is dancing. Not with you -- that was earlier. Though you were a lot better than you warned you were.

In my defense, I was actually a worse dancer before you asked.

[That Echo - memory from a faded life - certainly came at the perfect moment. Stefan had nursed enough headaches to move as normal, even if it's not a life skill he would've liked to have.]

But yeah, possibly? I wouldn't know without a physical.

A physical, huh? [ SHE'S TEASING. HONEST. ] Well. I've heard worse lines.

[ . . . ]

Hey! [He's offended. Or, well, the offended look would be more believable if he weren't laughing.] For the record, I'm also an medical student.

Really? [ her joking nature melts away -- if only because that is, in point of fact, seriously impressive. ] Wow. And you're stuck interning at the free clinic at the end of the universe. Rough deal.

Could be worse. I'm getting invaluable field experience. [How many med students could say that they've treated as many different species? Or learned to make their own medicines?] If I could remember any of it, then this whole thankless internship's worth it.

Yeah. [ reluctant agreement. ] Worth a few extra lines on the resume.

[ but now she's curious. and now she can make this about him, and not about her. ] What made you decide to go into medicine?

Oh, um - I've always wanted to be a doctor. My parents were surgeons, and my older brother has a cardiovascular practice up in Boston.

[It's weird, thinking about Alesci's family and how much they've shaped him into the person he is today. Stefan misses them far, far more than he misses Mystic Falls and its brand of crazy.]

It sounds mega cliche, but the older I got, the more I realized I liked the work that they did too.

More than mega, actually. [ it might as well be the cliche to end all cliches. but kate doesn't begrudge him for falling prey to it. as life-choices go, it's not so bad -- better a doctor, she supposes, than a murderous publishing magnate. but they're not talking about her parents. once upon a time kate wanted nothing more than to be exactly like her father. these days, however, she can barely stand to speak to him. ]

Where are you from? [ somewhere south of boston, she presumes. ]

Uh, that's complicated - I was born in Virginia, grew up there and in Jersey, and now I call Jordan home.

[Is it possible to have three homes? Stefan certainly hopes so.]

If I had to narrow it down to one, I'd say Jordan, just 'cause my family's still there.

Hey! Jersey. [ -- meet kate, the white whale: one of the minority of new yorkers who actually will defend jersey to the bitter end. but it's easily done when your family used to summer in the nicer parts of nj. ] Definitely more familiar with Jersey than I am with Jordan. But that's probably because I grew up in Manhattan. Jersey was never that far away.

No kidding? I feel half obligated to make some kind of stupid joke right now.

[He won't, just because there are way more pressing things at hand than bringing up the age old Jersey versus New York rivalry.]

Where's home for you now?

California. [ ... ] As of this morning. Or maybe as of a few weeks ago -- hard to figure out which timeline to count.

It could be both. Somehow.

Any uh, reason for the sudden cross-country move?

Sure. I got reasons. Oodles of them. [ ... ] But mostly 'cause New York getting a little too crowded. A few too many heroes running around. And I'm very pro-hero. Just...less so when they start trying to beat on each other instead of the bad guys.

Well, in that case, I can't blame you. I don't think the heroes back home cared much for friendly fire.

[They were also teenage girls so their priorities were (probably) very, very different from the heroes in Kate's universe.]

The work gets pretty futzing political at the higher levels. [ ... ] Everyone starts taking sides. No one wins, really, in the end.

I had no idea it got that complicated. [Yikes. Things Stefan did not imagine when he heard about superheroes: superhero politics.] Glad you got out while you could, then.

Me too. Or -- I will be glad when I finally convince myself it's not the coward's way out.

What? No, I wouldn't think so - if superhero politics were anything like the politics I knew back home, you were brave for getting out of there.

Kind of you to say so. Really.

[ but she (thinks she) knows better. ]

Just how I see it. Either way, at least it's not something we have to deal with here.

[He hopes. Otherwise he's been mega oblivious.]
