Space Bar is back open for business. Brand new seedy-looking furniture and everything.

[Wryly. Well, you take what you can get in a rest stop like this, and it's not like their furnishings were classy to begin with. She might have had to empty out her double casino winnings for the most part, but what the hell. It's in the name of business and there will always be more casinos, right?

Anyway. She's making this announcement from the Space Bar, but she has a lot more to say.]

So...this is the third attack on the Fleet that people know of. Two by this mystery Fleet and one by a bunch of jackass raiders. It pretty well stands to reason that it's gonna happen again some time in the future-- hopefully a lot later rather than sooner, but. There were a lot of near misses.

[Aria still hasn't woken up. For one.]

So a couple things:

One, I'd really appreciate getting whatever information we can together about both groups, and I would assume I'm not the only one. People actually managed to speak to that first Fleet this time, didn't they? I know my Comms officer got through, at least. So what gives that they rescued us this time instead of screwing us over? We need to work out what the hell is going on there.

Two, the raiders were pretty cut and dried, and I don't think they had Atroma ties-- at least, their ships aren't compatible with our augments. I think they were exactly who they said they were. But even if they don't come back... we weren't prepared for an attack. And we should be, because I guess space piracy is totally a thing, and next time we might not have a handy bunch of ships lurking nearby to help us out. Our crews need to be well balanced so that no ship is left without crucial defences. We need to have some kind of contingency plan in effect fleetwide, even if it's only an outline. I don't have the experience for that kind of thing, but I know there's people among us who do.

So... if you've got any information, no matter how trivial you think it might be, could you share it? Experiences, weird stuff that happened, anything. And ideas for how to deal with this if it happens again would be great, too. I'm gonna be writing up a policy for my own ship. I'd love to hear what other captains did with theirs. And definitely, seriously, please give thought to moving to another ship that's lacking your augment if you're already a little redundant on your own.

They were the ones who attacked us before, yes? [He wasn't here for that, but according to this post, they were.]

Why attack and then help? Did they say anything about that?

Not really, she did seem to kind of acknowledge that, but those two attacks before they never seemed to be trying to take us completely out of commission.

In fact they once forced us into a nebula that made it hard for any communication to get through. It could be their attack was an attempt to make contact and it was their only way, but I can't say for sure.

[Fascinating... So because the "viewers" were always listening and Atroma monitored their communications, driving the Fleet into dangerous territory would be their only option.

The problem being, if they do want to make contact again, they'll be putting themselves at risk now.]

Unlikely, but it's a possibility. [He tries to shoot the stranger a look to say "You're probably right, but we shouldn't talk about that here."]

If they wanted to communicate, they would have done so without trying to attack us.

[Do you see that bright red coat? Subtlety is not this man's forte, clearly.]

Yeah, you have a point there. The smart move would have been talking to us first anyway. I've never been one for figuring mysteries out so someone else would probably have a better theory.

[Or at least he likes people to think it isn't his forte.]

I've never been one for mysteries either. At least, ones that weren't in a play or a book.

[He wonders how they can really talk about this without Atroma seeing or hearing them. Was there something that could prevent whatever was watching them from looking in? The "nebulas" maybe?]

Would it be strange to say the change of pace was a little refreshing?

While it isn't fun being attacked, it is different from floating about doing nothing much.

No, I don't think that would be strange at all. It's why I use to wander around to different town when I was at home.

[Well that and so people didn't notice he wasn't aging. Or try to kill him for his bounty.]

Most people don't seem to be of the same opinion.

[And he isn't enjoying the recovery time. It's putting a damper on his ability to train and to pretend like nothing at all is wrong.]

Where did you wander? Were you a traveler for fun or for work?

Just for fun. I wanted to see the world and meet as many people as I could. So off I went! Haven't really regretted it yet.

...well, okay. So there was this one time I got lost in the desert and was dying of thirst that I regretted it slightly. But I figured out where I was and got to a town eventually! So that wasn't so bad in the end! [And then he laughs like nearly dying in the past is funny somehow.]

[There's a pause, and then Okita laughs, too. The way he says that story is just so nonchalant and the fact that it's a happy ending means Okita can't do anything but laugh.]

So long as you survived! Nothing lost, nothing gained, hm? Was the town hospitable?

Very! I found work sweeping at the barber shop straight away and they gave me all the water I could drink. A very friendly town!

Did you often work odd jobs in the villages you stopped in?

Yup! Guy's gotta eat and non-day-old donuts aren't free after all! And most inns aren't too excited about letting a drifter stay at their place without some way to pay for it.

Why were you traveling in the first place? Was there something you were out to find?

No real reason. I just wanted to see the world and the people in it. I got to meet a lot of interesting people that way.

It sounds like it. If my country were more open to travel, perhaps I'd like to do that one day once everything has settled.

More open to travel? Are you not allowed to leave your home town then?

Ah, not quite, but you do need permission to move about the country in any big capacity. It's not difficult to do, but it does require a little bit of money in order to get the right papers.

Really? We don't have anything like that. I can't even imagine how our world would even start to police something like that. Not to mention the transfer of goods from place to place is really important.

[He laughs]

It helps that we are a small nation of islands - four in total, although the largest to the north has still not been fully subjugated.

Oh. I suppose that would help. My world is just a planet. A big planet. All land so someone could just walk in may direction. I guess an island is a bit easier to keep track of people. Especially if the other islands are too far to swim to.

Are there no oceans on your planet? [Because that sounds...dire. No ocean fish or separation between nations - things could get sticky quick.]

Nope. No ocean. The first one I saw was when we landed on a planet that had one while on this trip. It was beautiful. I mean I heard they were big, but at least this one was massive!

Did you try swimming in it? I hear it can be very refreshing.
