[Wryly. Well, you take what you can get in a rest stop like this, and it's not like their furnishings were classy to begin with. She might have had to empty out her double casino winnings for the most part, but what the hell. It's in the name of business and there will always be more casinos, right?

Anyway. She's making this announcement from the Space Bar, but she has a lot more to say.]

So...this is the third attack on the Fleet that people know of. Two by this mystery Fleet and one by a bunch of jackass raiders. It pretty well stands to reason that it's gonna happen again some time in the future-- hopefully a lot later rather than sooner, but. There were a lot of near misses.

[Aria still hasn't woken up. For one.]

So a couple things:

One, I'd really appreciate getting whatever information we can together about both groups, and I would assume I'm not the only one. People actually managed to speak to that first Fleet this time, didn't they? I know my Comms officer got through, at least. So what gives that they rescued us this time instead of screwing us over? We need to work out what the hell is going on there.

Two, the raiders were pretty cut and dried, and I don't think they had Atroma ties-- at least, their ships aren't compatible with our augments. I think they were exactly who they said they were. But even if they don't come back... we weren't prepared for an attack. And we should be, because I guess space piracy is totally a thing, and next time we might not have a handy bunch of ships lurking nearby to help us out. Our crews need to be well balanced so that no ship is left without crucial defences. We need to have some kind of contingency plan in effect fleetwide, even if it's only an outline. I don't have the experience for that kind of thing, but I know there's people among us who do.

So... if you've got any information, no matter how trivial you think it might be, could you share it? Experiences, weird stuff that happened, anything. And ideas for how to deal with this if it happens again would be great, too. I'm gonna be writing up a policy for my own ship. I'd love to hear what other captains did with theirs. And definitely, seriously, please give thought to moving to another ship that's lacking your augment if you're already a little redundant on your own.

Oh, if only I could describe it. Do you use snails for most of your technology?

No. The den den are special. It's like-- they're naturally... telepathic of a sort, I guess you'd say here? They can pick up each other's thoughts and repeat them back, and someone at some point adapted this into a communication system.

We're pirates. We don't have what most people would class as technology in any big way. But what we do have, most people generally find odd.

What else have you got?

Hmm. The most obvious thing I can think of is the dials from the sky islands. They look like seashells, but they're manufactured. Or at least I think they are. They can do a variety of things-- record a voice, propel a small ship, emit heat, record an impact and deliver it back--

I've got one here, actually. It's part of my waver.

That is a lot of tasks that don't go together. [But she looks curious.] Yeah? Your waver?

In a sense, they don't. But they're all recording a kind of force to eject it again later, I guess...

Yeah. I won it back from the Atroma during their celebrations. [Something she is still severely unimpressed by.] It has a jet dial.

--ah. A waver is a small vehicle the Skypeians used to travel around the White White Sea.

It's like a breath dial. Which... [So amused,because she knows that doesn't explain it--] ...stores air of different kinds. When you affix one big enough to the back of a boat, it'll putt you through the water at a decent pace.

A jet dial is a breath dial turned up to extreme speed. It makes for an impressive propulsion system. If my waver was usable to its full power here, I could use it to travel at high speeds anywhere I wanted to go. Including up a vertical incline. Jet dials don't get made anymore, so I lucked out.

That's disappointing. I was hoping it stored jets. [After the breath dial explanation.]

Why aren't they made anymore? [You encouraged her. There will be questions.]

I'm not sure myself-- I only got half an explanation in the first place. But either they were deemed too dangerous or they're just ... the type of shell is rare or extinct. I got both answers thrown at me during my time there, so maybe a little of column A, kind of thing.

It is true nobody can use the jet dial safely without a lot of experience. Wavers aren't usually able to be ridden with any skill until you've been practicing for years on end.

[Usually. She's pretty smug about the usually.]

Hmm. [Just taking all that in.] So you have it with you and you can use it whenever we land somewhere with a body of water? I'm assuming you can do it safely.

Yup!

[She's happy about that, too.] Though it doesn't work too well on more solid surfaces anymore, but I think that's more the terrain is too rough. It's a pity. I've ridden that thing right up the side of a giant beanstalk before.

A giant beanstalk? As in, "Jack and the?"

Not a reference I get. Giant green leafy thing stretching to the sky?

[Grin.] No. But there was a self-styled genocidal God with delusions of grandeur. Does that count?

Maybe. Did he say Fee-fi-fo-fum?

Actually...I'm not sure. It's just a thing said by the giant in the Jack and the Beanstalk story. Anyway, I derailed us.

I think we derailed a while ago. [It's an interesting conversation, but it has little to do with her original topic. But she's not sure what else to add, so it was a welcome diversion.]

True. Well, I should probably let you get back to your other conversations. If anyone has any epiphanies let me know? [She's not expecting any.]

I was kind of hoping people would. The amount of people who weighed in today were a little disappointing.

I know that feeling. A lot of people probably feel ill-equipped and eager to return to what passes for normal. [Honestly, Kitty hasn't participated much in terms of these things either. She sees it as playing the Atroma's game largely because she spent a long time in the last place trying to champion these very things. Trying to find the clues and the patterns and find a way out only to have very little support or help along with a lot of criticism for not getting the job done from people who weren't trying at all. It was pretty demoralizing and she hasn't been eager to get back to it. She does want her ship to be as strong as it can though especially after what just happened.]
