#002 [Video]

[What's that sound? The sound of an alarm going off. What's that video feed? Well, right now the camera is set on a bobblehead that is rattling like crazy. Its base has been elongated, and from under said base flashes (slowly) a red light. Then it turns blue after two buzzer sounds from the alarm. Then yellow. Then orange. Then green. Then purple. Back to red. It continues to cycle as Hiro turns the camera to face him, and he's bobbing his head with the beat of the buzzer while standing at a control panel of different metal than the ship that has been welded onto the wall by the door to the main deck. Every time he presses a button on said panel, the light changes color. Then he hits a small green button above a large red button on the side, and the whole thing stops.

[Yes, the entire Bishop was just subjected to that without warning.]

Pretty cool, huh?

[Hiro looks like a cat who just caught his very first bird.]

It's all hooked up to our control panels, but I can't program it to do everything I need it to until we have a pilot and a communications officer. Right now, we have fire, gas, and the latter half of the collision alarms. I still need to program one for docking and to hook up another to the radar so we can know when we're headed dangerously close to something that could damage the ship. Right now, we've only got one that tells us we've been hit.

[SHRUG.]

But since, for some reason, everything under the control panel looks like gibberish to me... [he takes a moment to look into the camera like he's on the office] ... we get to wait until we have someone more "competent" [airquotes!] than I am.

P.S., if there are any communications officers who wanna hop ship over to the Bishop for keeps, let me know. It'll work out best if you're one of two on your current ship.

All right, you're fine. Maybe try to warn us next time, though. A warning... before the warning. That is what all this is, right?

[oh! danger forgotten. now she's peering over at the bobble-headed rigmarole there, trying to see what all he's got hooked up.]

Yep. Alarm system for various emergencies around the ship.

... Henry told me I wasn't allowed to get rid of them. Now they're a part of the Bishop's legacy.

Wow, that's... Charming.

[she... smiles? a little? she kind of misses Henry, so...]

Creepy, but charming. And you just figured this all out in your spare time?

Yep, one of the many projects I've been at this last month. Got grow lights for Hange's plant project, too, but those don't take long to make. Still got a few things left to fix up on this one, and then I've got a few more to do around here. You wanna see how this works? Promise I'll silence the alarm.

[ladiesss]

Wow, yeah. Since I missed the demo...

[man, what has she missed! she's been holed up in the library, so Hiro's not the only one who kind of dropped off the map for a while...]

Alright, so.

[tapping at the screen, muting the alarm, containing it to the room they're in aaaand.]

It'll flash different colors for different alarms. I've gotta get some help setting up the two that aren't connected yet, and also for a third with a component missing, but so far...

[pressing a button along the bottom of the panel, and it's flashing green!]

This means there's a poisonous gas leak. Green for gas, pretty easy. [Next button! Now it's yellow.] This one's for fire. So if either of those go off, we probably need to evacuate because our oxygen supply is going to run out fast.

[skipping a button, and now it's red!] This means we've collided with something hard enough to damage the ship. It's connected to how much power the shields have, so if it goes off, we're in a state of emergency.

Now for the other ones. [Back a button, and now it's orange.] Once I get a pilot over here to help me out, I'm wiring this one to our radar systems. It'll tell us, I'm hoping, about a minute before we collide with something big enough to damage the ship. This should give us time to get in the SR pods and get out, or, if we have a pilot on-board for whatever reason, to get us out of the way. Gonna be really useful.

[moving down, and now it's blue.] This one's good, it doesn't make any noise, and it'll only flash here and in the hall. It just means someone's docking their pod with us, and I'm gonna need help from a pilot for this one, too.

[Aaaand the last one. Here's purple!]

This one is the manual alarm. When you want to hit it, hit the big red button on the side of the panel. Once we have a communications officer on deck, I'll be able to hook it up to send a distress signal. This is what we're gonna press if a fight breaks out that we can't put down, or for some other kind of emergency that the ship can't detect.

[she listens to all of this, very attentive! she started off standing, but then started leaning on one of the comm tables, and by the time he is done she's got both elbows propped up on the edge to hold up her head.]

Man... This is amazing! Loud noises totally forgiven. I'm...

[dfksdjl she suddenly laughs, scratching the back of her head.]

Jeez, you're a smart guy. You remind me of my sister.

[everydayhero]

[LOOKIT HOW RED HE GETS, he's so proud of himself.]

Yeah? Is this her kind of thing, too?

[ladiesss]

Oh yeah. She's been building robots since like, age five. They couldn't keep her in school or anything. It was way too slow for her.

[she sighs a little, nostalgic... things got bad between her and her sister, but she still loves her a lot.]

I mean, I get good grades and stuff, but this is all way beyond me. The purple button's my favorite. That's such a good idea.

[everydayhero]

Sounds like we might have been friends.

[LOOK AT HIM, BRIMMING WITH PRIDE.]

The purple alarm's probably the best part. Or at least, once we have a communications officer it will be.

[One last little stop here. He points to the little green button above the one for the purple alarm.]

Just so you know, this button? [click! the lights stop.] Turns the alarm off.

Pfft, you guys would probably take over the whole fleet.

[so it's PROBABLY GOOD that her sister isn't here.]

Oh, look at that. Very important. Good work.

... Oh, hey, I wanted to ask you about that library project. You on board with me making a computer filing system?

[ladiesss]

You read my mind. That would be such a help.

Awesome. You can expect it, then. Shouldn't take too terribly long, I mean, the alarms didn't even take a month. Couple weeks tops, here.

That's cool... Um, do you need anything from me?

If you can take stock of all the books and give me a list, that'll help. Anything specific you're gonna want on it?

Already got it. [THAT she can at least claim with pride.]

Mm, I was thinking of putting in a special flagging system for books that are especially old or, like, easily damageable items that people try to check out. Just for records.

Awesome, knew I could count on you for that.

Flagging feature for brittle materials. Obviously, it'll have a checking system for people to take books out and bring them back.

[uah, who new the approval of a little kid could be so nice? she smiles.]

Yeah, perfect. And, uh, maybe if you can build me one of those gun-shaped laser scanners.

Not for any reason. I just want one. They're cool.

[he's beaming here]

What do you want it to scan?

[blink.]

I'm kidding. Normal scanny things. Bar-codes.

[he could swing that first one next time he has somewhere to scrounge for parts]

[He's definitely teasing her for her word choice.]

Sweet. [she doesn't mind. she knows how she talks. C:] Maybe we'll save the eyeball scanner for if we ever build a crazy secret safe or something.

... [oh no. he takes the biggest breath, the most defeated sigh and shrug.]

Welp. Now I have to make one.
