I guess we are. [He chuckles, he just had the mental image of Pepé in a cape and it's the sort of image that could scar small children for life. ] It is pretty cool, isn't it?

So... is your life really as perfect as it sounds? Getting accepting by your Dad, playing music with your friends every day?

[the word gets stuck her her throat, and her tone immediately drops to a much softer, sadder, quieter tone. It takes a second, but she forces the word out]

Dead?

[Oh. Right. There really isn't a good way to say that. Manolo winces, and raises his hands placatingly. ]

It-it's okay! [Manolo, it's a lot of things, but 'okay' is not one of those things.] I've been returned to life. I earned the right to it, I was returning to the Land of the Living when I was dragged here.

What? [it's a lot to process so she pauses for a second, sorting it out. So he... died but came back to life? In his world? Or wait, he was 'returning' to life? So then he just... As she puts the pieces together she stares directly at him, and raises her voice again]

A-Are you really saying that you died right before coming here? How are you... [this is the part where she realizes that she's getting louder, and she tries to check herself but it makes her voice sound slightly tense but steady]

How can that be 'okay'?

[Yeah, that is really not okay. In fact it is the least 'okay' thing ever. ]

There were...uh death gods involved. I did a couple of trails for them, and they granted my life back to me.

...It's a little more complicated than that, but that's the basics. I just...ended up here, instead of where I was heading.

[He points in a general upwards direction. ] Back to the Land of the Living.

[she crosses her arm and frowns a bit, concentrating on every word that he's saying. It's a lot to parse through, a lot of crazy ideas and a huge adventure that can't be accurately summed up in a few statements. At the end she finally says]

I mean-- I'm glad that you're okay, but dying is...

[she looks down at her lap, eyes dark, before looking back at him... A bit more sure and confident in what she's saying]

It hurts. And if you're hurting and pretending that the pain isn't there, that's a bad idea.

[It's the worst idea, but actually opening up is terrible for Manolo, too. He knows María and Joaquín aren't here, but they could arrive one day, and the last thing he needs is for them to know how much he's been through. They'd blame themselves, and that's something he can't let happen. ]

I'm not pretending, I promise. I just...have my own way of dealing with it. [Namely trying to make sure no one else gets harmed in the wake of his own disaster. ] I will tell you, if I ever feel the need for someone, how is that?

[hm... she nods] Okay. If you're telling me that, I'll believe you.

[aka, don't lie... bro... She really genuinely likes him. She continues to stare at him before adding]

You remind me of someone I knew in my world. A really... genuinely nice person. Don't be like him and try to carry everything on your own.

[she nods again. And balls up her fist as if she's going to like... lightly punch his shoulder? But she stops. Emotionally obtuse as she is, even she realizes that she's projecting on him a lot. So instead she un-clenches her hand and puts her hands behind her head]

[Wow, he seriously thought she was gonna punch him for a second, there. When she unclenches, he relaxes, offering a smile. ]

You didn't, I appreciate having someone concerned over me.

[she smiles crookedly in response. She doesn't quite know what to say next so she stretches and then stands up]

I should probably get back to work. [aka, her weird mad science] But thanks for talking. I'm glad you're on this ship.
