[Chekov wishes he could be surprised or, at the very least, unsettled when he wakes up in a foreign place, but there's a point at which this sort of thing becomes a fairly routine--if always unpleasant--occurrence. Losing people is never easy, no matter the universe, no matter the number of times it happens.

But taking stock of the situation and establishing who is here has to come before mourning those who were left behind in MarinaNova. To that end, Chekov, somewhat familiarized with his new home and in clothes that are slightly more dignified than the pajamas that he initially woke up in on the Marsiva, begins a broadcast. Are you listening to this in Standard/English/Common? If so, enjoy the ridiculously thick Russian accent.]

This is Lieutenant Pavel Andreievich Chekov of the Federation starship Enterprise. If you have met me already or if you are affiliated with Starfleet, please respond to this message. [He smiles even though he's in no real mood to be cheerful.] I would also be happy with replies from you if we're strangers.

[The face he makes at "captain doctor" should tell Chekov all he needs to know about that.] Uh. No. It just kind of happened. [But he's doing his best.]

Tell me about it. It's a strange thing to meet someone who knows you already.

I have heard that the captain's quarters are nice. [If that makes him feel any better about having to be the captain? Maybe?]

It's also strange to meet someone who knows you, but only some of the time that you've known them. Would you believe that this is the third time that I have spoken with you outside of our universe, Doctor?

[He snorts.] A few months ago? No, I wouldn't have believed it. Now? Now I've been shot at by space pirates who tried to commandeer the ship that I accidentally became captain of-- all in the name of someone's ridiculous entertainment. I'd believe anything.

[Captain McCoy fighting off space pirates definitely tests the boundaries of things-that-Chekov-can-believe.]

...Did that end well? The attempted commandeering of your ship, I mean?

[It stretches the boundaries of things that McCoy can believe, Chekov.]

Not for the ones who tried to board. [He sighs a bit then, shrugs one shoulder.] The Caprine was badly damaged but no major injuries to the crew.

Ah. I imagine that it was difficult, all of it. [The commanding, the killing--or it sounds like there was killing, which is another thing that he can't imagine McCoy doing.] Not an ideal first command.

Maybe not. [Definitely not. McCoy can't imagine himself doing it either but... some tough choices had to be made.] But I think we're a little better equipped to deal with an attack now, should it come again.

[He's pretty sure it'll happen again.]

I hope that dealing with another attack will be unnecessary. This fleet can't be attacked too often, surely...? There is no reason for it to have enemies.

Except for good ratings, if you believe we're actually out here for an audience.

I don't believe that an audience, if there is one, would be entertained by attacks.

Maybe with jokes that's true, but not with attacks. [He doesn't sound entirely certain.] Do you really believe that someone would watch a show to see people suffer?
