I haven't taken the time to endure the exploits many of you have been. It doesn't suit me, I think. I'm being productive in other ways, although I'm not sure I can share the fruits of my labor. But bearing something is fulfillment, right? If you have given life to your work, it feels good, even if that life is mild and quiet. Sometimes, perhaps, even moreso then. Well, not everybody wants to be in history books.

Hey, what's some soap you really like? I've gotten myself blotted with ink, which is why I'm pausing to sit back and talk. I didn't want to mark my papers. Then again, it's dry by now, so maybe I can just leave it.

One more question. Does anyone want to make a small trade?

[Things have changed, but they haven't changed enough that Asuka's first reaction to any of Kaworu's writing has stopped being mildly affronted incredulity.]

Just paper. I had gotten an inkwell, but I knocked it over. There are an awful lot of grey spots on me now.

Oh, you haven't seen yet, but I've been gaining a collection of pens. For the inkwell.

[Really it just seems like he likes amassing stuff in general.]

The thickness of the lines... all the angles. A lot goes into it.

I want it to feel exactly right when it's finished being written, even if it never gets played.

You didn't say you were writing music.

That's how I'm spending some time right now. I haven't done much of it in a while.

At any rate, to hear this played would require more instruments than I believe we have at our disposal as members of this fleet.

It's not a solo piece. :)

[It's honestly never occurred to Asuka that writing music might be something Kaworu could do. She had always figured he only played, never composed. Like his questionable creativity began and ended at his clothing choices.]

Is it orchestral, then?

Maybe we could rig up something.

It would be nice to properly hear it. But I'm all right with just making sure it's written, too. It's a good feeling.

How many people does that take?

No. You've got to hear it. That's like writing a story and never sharing it.

Is that a bad thing, not sharing a story?

[Chamber orchestra... she's pretty sure that doesn't include a piano, which is the only thing she knew that Kaworu and Shinji both played. It shouldn't surprise her that Kaworu at least probably has a few other instruments under his belt.]

What's the good of it if no one sees it?

Yeah. I'd like to.

Well, when it's finished, I'll have done it, right? That's good just by itself. Everyone does things that nobody sees. The motion is the essential part. There's nothing good without motion.

But if you want to hear it after all, it would be better for me to find a way to have it played.

I guess I think creative things are worth seeing.

Shinji has that keyboard, right?

You thinking it has worth helps offer it worth.

Yeah. We use it from time to time, trying to keep from falling out of practice. Don't listen to him if he tries to say he's anything other than adept and a quick study.

I guess that wouldn't be any use for chamber music.

I know he's better than that. He's too modest, it's annoying.

I had intended to include a keyboard section--just one performer--in the composition, so it could be of use after all. There is much left to gather, of course...

If he speaks highly of himself, someone may dispute it. If he speaks poorly of himself, someone may be generous and praise him instead. That's the sort of thing he thinks. Better, in his opinion, to ridicule himself in a method under his own control than to set himself up to be hurt by someone's judgment. Well, I think that's part of what causes it.
