[ There is very little worse than waking in an unfamiliar place, disorientated, confused, and incredibly disgruntled. Still that he can't remember ever going to sleep, he doesn't need sleep so why did he... Eizen shifts groggily attempting to get out of the bed he found himself in - only to come crashing down on the cold hard floor.

With his elbow landing on the device the feed flicks on just in time to see and hear the blond hair man curse loudly, sharp jarring pain shooting up his arm. Growling he pushes himself up to sit leaning against the side of the bed, hand reaching up to holding his still swimming head. ]

Where the hell...? Zaveid?

[ He can remember that the idiot had been with him, that they spent the evening drinking and talking as the world continued on around them unaware. ]

If this is some kind of joke I'm not laughing.

[This is almost kinda frustrating because he can't tell if... there's anything on the screen? He can't tell if Eizen is invisible like everyone says Dezel is when he's on camera.]

A wind seraph? You mean a malak.

[ What sucks being a thousand years behind everyone else is that you miss the apparent name changes your people as a whole seemingly went through. ]

[That's the second time he's heard that word in the past couple of weeks.]

That was the old word, yeah. [If he ever used it, he doesn't remember. He doesn't remember a lot, really.] I don't know when the name changed. I'm not ancient like Zaveid is.

[ Dezel calls it the old name and it makes Eizen wonder when exactly it changed. It's something to file away, think about later, focus instead on the more pressing matters. ]

That's the first time I've heard someone call Zaveid ancient.

[ How old is he now? ]

[He's still not sure how to navigate this minefield, but he's sure as hell not going to mention what Eizen's fate is. Chances are he probably already knows, anyway.]

[ That seems to defuse him, if only a little, jaw still setting tightly. ]

She left Rayfalke? [ He didn't think she'd ever leave, that she was determined to wait for him to quit the seas and come home. ] Who is Sorey?

[ Better not hear that this guy has touched his sister. ]

[He could remark on how Edna must be ancient too, but he doesn't. He wants to keep his head attached to his body.]

Yeah. She was already traveling with him when I joined up. I think her and Lailah were friends or something-- I'm not sure. Didn't ask. [It's none of his business.]

Sorey travels around purifying malevolence. Sometimes he finds seraphim to bless the land, and people to worship them. He's the one who bridges the gap: a Shepherd.

He's got some crazy ideas, but he's a good kid. Your little sister would've destroyed him otherwise.

[ SECOND RECORD SCRATCH. ]

A Shepherd.

[ His sister is traveling with a Shepherd. He knows he shouldn't but he assumes the worse, assumes Edna has been tethered against her will. That his Sorey has take his sister to use as tool for himself. The communicator creaks in his hands and around him it almost sounds as those the metal walls echo that sound, mirroring the malak's mood. ]

Is Edna tethered to him?

[ The best case scenario is that she isn't, that for some reason she is with him but not bound, that she has her will. But he knows better, he remembers what the Artorius did while he still lived. How he and the Abbey stripped malaks for their free will, used them, and threw them aside when they were no longer of use.

It won't matter if this Sorey is a good kid, or he has done good for their world, not if Eizen hears what he doesn't want to hear. He'll kill him for ever thinking about forming a pact with her. ]

[... He was trying so hard but he had no idea Shepherd was a bad word, jesus CHRIST.

But he knows what tethering means, a little. At least he has some context thanks to Zaveid.]

[ He wants to believe Dezel, he truly does, but it's difficult to believe the word of a seraph he just met. How does he know that he is telling the truth and not words his Shepherd told him to speak. ]

Who do you think gave the exorcists the power to enslave us? [ The wound is still raw, it hasn't been that long since Artorius' defeat and Maotelus' ascension. ] The man they proclaimed to be Shepherd.

Edna is my sister, I let anyone use her as a tool. I won't let anyone put her life in danger.

What the hell-- this is news to me!

[He breathes in slowly, lets it out through his nose, but it doesn't make him less pissed off. A part of him seriously wants to throw down right now and possibly rip someone's arm off if they touch Sorey or the others.

... Huh. He doesn't usually campaign so openly about his friendships, but oh well.]

Think about what you're saying. It's been ages since the time you lived in. Do you really think nothing ever changes? Do you really think Zaveid would go back to that?!

[ It's difficult to acknowledge the possibility that things have changed since the Abbey was in control, not with the Edna being involved. Her health, her safety, her freedom, it is everything to him and all it is in jeopardy with what Dezel is telling him.

He'll kill whoever dares threaten it, even if it meant going against Dezel and his friends. Even Zaveid.

... Zaveid.

The name hits Eizen hard enough to inhale sharply, eyes widening. Do you really think Zaveid would go back to that?! Eizen feels himself twist with his anger, jaw setting tight. Zaveid wouldn't submit to chains again, not after what he suffered, not after what they had witnessed during the Abbey's reign. He knows this, he does, and still... ]

No. He wouldn't. [ He speaks stiffly. ] But I'd rather hear it from him before I start believing everything you say.

[ He doesn't know Dezel, he doesn't know this Sorey. He knows Zaveid, trusts Zaveid with his life, with his true name. If he says it is okay, that both he and Edna are themselves, Eizen will believe him. ]

Fine. Then wait for him to come to you.

[Dezel's voice is flat, razor sharp at the edges.]

But if you're stupid enough to attack Sorey and the others without listening first, then I'll beat some sense into you myself.

I don't give a damn if you're Edna's brother.

[rockily]

[ Eizen won't wait. Because if he did he'd be waiting a long time, days, weeks, maybe even a month, and this? He won't wait that long to see this resolved, won't sit with all of this eating away at him.

He scoffs at Dezel's threat, head cocked off to the side. ]

If he proves to be better than his predecessors he'll have nothing to fear from me. If not...

[ Eizen won't hesitate to strike him down. ]

... I would end him myself.

[Eizen doesn't need to know just how far they went to save Sorey from his actions as a hellion. He doesn't need to know that Mikleo, too, was a dragon.]

It's not just your sister's life on the line.

[rockily]

[ Something about that strikes a cord in Eizen, giving him a moment of pause. No will-less malak would threaten to strike down their master, nor would they who hold such conviction in their voice.

For all the hesitation he holds to believe Dezel's words, this makes him think. ]

Dezel, was it?

[If any seraph or malak is their own master, it's Dezel. That's for sure.]

Yeah?

[rockily]

[ He wants to believe, he realizes, believe that humans are capable of learning from their mistakes. That the cruelties once inflicted upon their kind never happened again. He wants to believe that there are more people out there like Aifread and his crew. And Edna, he wants to believe she is happy and safe with people who treat her better than her own brother ever did.

He want too, but he can't. Not yet. ]

I hope your Shepherd can prove me wrong.

[Dezel thinks of how he died, not for the first time. He remembers the gun in his hand. He remembers Sorey's shattered expression when Dezel gave his life for Rose, for Sorey. For their dream.

For himself.]

He's the kind of guy who'll let you choose your own path even if he disagrees with it. Even if you betray him. Even if it gets you killed.

And then, after all of that, he'll still say you're a friend.

It's... [His voice cracks a little at the edges.] It's infuriating.

[ Eizen exhales, heavily, slumping against a wall of one of the Marsiva's halls. ]

He sounds like one hell of a kid.

[ Someone like that wouldn't tether Edna against her will, something inside him reasons. Wouldn't tether Zaveid. ]

A little too optimistic and maybe naive, but a good kid.

[ Unbidden his thoughts drift to Laphicet and something in his chest aches. ]

He is.

[He hopes Sorey doesn't find this conversation, but he probably will. Dezel decides he doesn't really care.]

People like me don't have friends like him.

[ That sounds too familiar, cuts too close. Eizen feels himself deflating, anger slowly draining from his veins. His hand finds his pocket, curling around the coin that sits within and he sighs. ]
