(There is a steely glint to his eyes now; threatening, mad.)

But what is there to act against? They are just words, Nelyo, I promise, I take no hurt. They have said worse about us, Nelyo - much has even been true.

You know, rumors are just words. Until you give them power. And you're giving them a lot of power right now, which just makes people more likely to believe them. This is counterproductive.

(Much in his opinion. His expression is tight and his eyes are dark.) The truth cannot be understood by children so young. I will not have them holding it against you.

My family would not hide the truth from those who discovered it. (Elves do not lie well or at all.) It is my duty to defend them.

I don't actually mind some of them, Maitimo. {Including those about Fingon and Maedhros.} Though the true secrets should probably stay unsaid.

Did you catch wind of the rumors regarding us, cousin?

{Yes.} Do they repulse you?

...no. {He glances away.} I thought you might be.

We are half cousins, Maitimo, and you are my dearest friend. And I would like to believe the Valar would rather us happy together than miserable apart.

Together...? {The word makes his heart ache and his chest tighten.} There was never anyone {else} for me.

{Fingon's ears might be turning red! He ducks his head.} If that particular rumor were true, I mean...

Finno... {His gaze lifts in time to catch sight of that red tinge.} I...would not mind...if it were true.

{Not at all. To not be alone... To be closer to one he thinks a hero...}

{Fingon peeks up, a touch uncertain before he smiles.}

Where are you? I think we should finish this in person.

{He breathes in and holds the air in his lungs, his heart thudding helplessly.}

{Fingon closes the link before self-consciously smoothing robes and hair as he leaves his room for his cousin's. He knocks lightly, trying to ignore the nervous flutter of his heart.}

{He paces in his quarters, unwilling to look at his appearance in a mirror - though he thinks he probably should. He knows what he will see, however, and the prospect is frightening. An old hope has been kindled within him; a hope he has ignored for years.

I am twisted. Wrong. I must protect him. Yet with how Fingon spoke, he must see him.

His hand shakes as he pulls open the door. The face that greets him on the other side is more lovely than ever. He does not speak at first - instead, he draws Fingon inside by tugging on his arm.}

{Fingon has never seen Maedhros as twisted or evil. He's always been a beacon of light, safety, and joy.

And yet there's been a hint around the edges of possibilities. So he's left with nervous energy and he manages not to shift his weight from foot to foot. He doesn't need any coaxing, only steps inside before resting a gentle hand on Maedhros' chest.}

I feel safest and happiest when I am with you. We could be in danger, and I would not care so long as you were with me.

This isn't about the truth though, this is about rumors, which are often baseless and grow more ridiculous the more attention is given to them. By trying so hard to defend them from rumors, you'll only add fuel to the flames and help them grow.

{A gentle warmth floods him at the soft touch and he covers the hand on his chest with his own, certain that Fingon can feel how his heart flies. He remembers when the raiders attacked; Fingon had been so steady even after being stabbed. Was that because they were fighting together?}

Are you attracted to me? Much of me is missing or scarred. You have seen much of it with your own eyes...

Mm your analogy is fitting. (Since he has often been the one in his family to add "fuel to the flames".) Once I ascertain my family is comfortable, I will relax my guard.

I'm not sure how but I'm glad it seems to fit. I think that may help them more than threats on their behalf, honestly.

I have a habit of being too late to come to their aid, you see. Thus it feels safer to pose a threat first.

{There'd been nothing to fear once Maedhros had found Fingon. He'd stopped worrying, had only acted to help his family in removing the threats.

His fingers curl gently and his gaze falls to their hands. He turns his hand over and entwines their fingers.}

You have always been beautiful to me. Now is no different than when your skin was unmarred and you were whole.

...I confess to not having thought much about binding myself to another like my parents did.
