I’m sure everyone already saw Kirk’s post and knows that Leonard McCoy is gone. That means the Caprine currently doesn’t have a Captain, and as her first officer…I want to ask if anyone else is willing to step in as Captain. I am decidedly not up to the job.

[ He doesn’t care how little actual work being Captain seems to be. He doesn’t want it. ]

I do think first preference should go to anyone on the Caprine who wants it, but after that, anything goes.

[ A pause, like maybe that’s all he has to say, before Kai adds one more thing, voice softer. ]

Also, if anyone wants to come over, drink, and share McCoy stories, please join me this evening, on the Caprine.

[ They still have sufficient alcohol, and it seems as fitting an action as anything else Kai can think of. ]

[ That's why he'd taken the position in the first place, to help Leonard. Not to lead.

He opens the door, lets her in. ]

Take a seat. [ A pause. ] I'm not quite sure how to do this, given that he isn't dead, just gone. Maybe he's happy to be back where he belongs.

[ Though happy didn't seem quite the right word generally for McCoy. ]

No but we'll still miss him. I'm sure he's glad to be back though, nagging everyone on the Enterprise. So... in his honor.

[ Kai agrees to it and gestures at the small selection of alcohol he has. ]

As long as it's not blood wine, I think anything is okay. I haven't done a lot of drinking yet though, in this life. Just a fair warning.

[ Kai gives her a smile. And then, since he started this, he figures he should start the conversation. ]

The first time I talked to Leonard, he said he intended on treating me medically and wouldn't take no for an answer. It was the first time I'd heard that from a human doctor.

Sounds like him! He was always kind of stubborn.

I technically never met him. Not until I got here. Emony did though, years ago, at Ole Miss. She was judging a gymnastic competition. He saved her life and the life of another Trill. I think we helped make his choice to study medicine.

Especially about medical matters.

[ That keeps Kai's smile going. ]

That story you need to tell. How old was he, then?

Oh absolutely.

[She smiles still.]

I'm not sire how old he was, maybe eighteen? He was young, really young, but he had an old soul. His roommate was a Tessma, relations between Trill and Tessma were not... good at the time. His roommate tried to kill Emony. [For Leonard's sake, she'll leave out just how close they'd been.]

An old soul like yours, or an old soul because he was a grumpy old man even as a young man.

[ They need to be able to rib him, even when he's not here, right? Maybe. Kai isn't sure how friendship works. ]

[That makes her laugh.] A bit like a grouchy old man. One that cares though, probably ages a bit with each reckless stunt his friends pull.

[What kind of friends and crew would they be if they didn't?]

He was a pretty good Captain over here, because he cared so much.

Did he have any desire to do that back where you came from?

I believe it. [She only got to experience a bit of that.]

Being captain? Not really, not that anyone knows anyway. He did try retiring once but Admiral Kirk forced him back.

There's a lot to unpack in that.

Let's start with Admiral Kirk. Admiral?

[A little laugh.]

Captain Kirk had... a tendency to break the rules and cause trouble. Eventually, Starfleet Command thought he could cause less trouble as an admiral.

He caused so much trouble they promoted him? That's a thing?

Nothing else seemed to have worked. And for awhile, this did! He was one of the admirals that stayed behind a desk.

[Obviously. Things happened.]

How long did that last?

About... two years? Maybe a bit more?

He stole a starship later and got it blown up. Went back in time and stole some whales.

[Saying this out loud, Kirk's career is impossible to believe.]

But we should probably be talking about McCoy.

You're right. And mischief is probably not the best way to celebrate him.

Staying safe would be better appreciated, I think.

What are we going to do about medical attention? I don't really need it, but for the others?

I wish Julian were here. [That's no help though.]

All Starfleet graduates have had some medical training, first aid, and I was part of Trill's Symbiosis Commission. I could see about changing my augment?

I don't know how much the medical augment does for someone, so I don't know how it helps. I think Doudanuki and myself will be fine, from a medical care standpoint, so it's just all the rest of you.
