[Awhile back, she'd toyed with the idea of building a replicator in the hopes of making clothes and more palatable food available to the fleet. And it had taken since about then for Ezri to find all the parts she would need. It might not be incredibly efficient at first but she could improve it gradually once she finished.

Off and on over a couple weeks, she worked at it in the cargo bay and, today, she turns on her communicator with a smile.]

I've been working on a little project lately and I should finish today, I thought I'd share my progress.

[She sets it down, tilted towards the device she's working on and gets back to work. About ten minutes later there's a loud BANG and the immediate area starts filling with smoke. She's quick to smother the cause and then mutters a curse.]

I've been a scientist and and engineer- that should have worked.

[You can't have something explode in his vicinity and not expect him to show up with his sword drawn, ready to fight.

Sadly he sees it's just Ezri and a smoking heap after he rushes into the cargo hold, so he groans a little and lowers his blade.]

I'm not trying to set us on fire. [Huff.

Ezri pulls herself to her feet and kicks the heap of now useless tech.] I was trying to build a replicator.

Might I ask what that contraption is meant to be?

[Before it blew up that is.]

[She sighs.]

It was supposed to be a replicator, able to convert matter and energy into things like clothing or food, drink.

The marvels of technology amongst this space fleet is astounding. What went wrong?

[Since it seemed to be a smoking pile of components right now. Oh dear.]

Oh, it's technology from home, technically. Power consumption is probably a bit much for the fleet though. It does take a lot of energy to convert anything into something else.

[She knows her design was sound.]

I see. If you are attempting to build a machine that can re-create real food items instead of this poor attempt at space food then I would be happy to assist? Of course, I only have my wits and magic abilities, what's left of them, to aid you.

[He's tired of the space gel. Can you tell?]

Back home I've dabbled a bit in engineering of another kind. Can I be of assistance to aid your machine to come to fruition?

As much as I would welcome it, I'm just not sure any of these ships could handle it. The Marsiva might but we have no way of utilizing their engines. I'll have to find something else to contribute, I suppose.

You're welcome to help with that though, once I think of something.

Kai is quick to appear after the sound of the bang, and once he puts his gun away he looks set to drag her away from the smoke. ]

Are you alright?

[Well, that sure sounded dangerous. ]

Are you alright, mon étolie? That was quite the bang.

[Don't judge her.]

I'm alright. [She lets out a cough and waves away and lingering smoke.] It sounded worse than it was.

[She smiles a little.]

Everything is fine, don't worry. It really just sounded awful.

[He relaxes a little, because hey, at least she's not hurt. ]

It did. What are you even creating?

[Aw, Lumiere.]

I was trying to build a replicator. So we'd have something better to eat than what the ships are stocked with.

[He worries.]

So a replicator...cooks better food? I am not quite sure what it is.

It actually converts matter into other things, like food, drinks, or clothing. They're very common on board starships and space stations like the one I work on.

Oh! That's [Weird. How does that even work??? science??? ] - can it create anything?

Not from scratch, we have to have recipes or plans programmed in. If this had worked, I would have gotten started on a database for it. Primarily food.

That would have been really something.

[Nope. Nope. More questions. Sorry, Ezri, he can't wrap his eighteenth century brain around this one. You're gonna have to help him. ]

...Do you have to put the raw ingredients into it? To make it create the things? Or does it create things out of nothing?

Not at all.

[It's okay, Lumiere, she's got this.]

So long as the molecular makeup of something is programmed into it, it will convert matter right into the final product.

[IT'S MAGIC. ]

That sounds astounding. We have nothing like that where I am from. If we want to make food or clothes, we do it by hand.

[ He'll judge her any time she does something worth judging. ]

I'm not sure I'm reassured.

[ Kai studies her. ]

So what made that seem like a good idea.

[It seems like it!]

Everyone has been at that level of development once, eventually you'll all reach the same point we have.

[Rude.]

I've been involved in worse.

[She takes a breath and hen lets out a sigh.]

The food. I thought it might benefit everyone to have something more... palatable.

Perhaps, though it will be very far in the future for me. I doubt I'll see it.

[All being well and he doesn't remain an immortal piece of furniture forever, anyway. ]

It is fascinating to learn about, all the same.
