Hey guys! I've gotten myself some extra donuts from our lovely new hosts. [It's up to you to decided if he's being sarcastic or not about that statement. It can be hard to tell the difference.] And they look delicious! [He moves the camera down to pan across the delicious treats.] And trust me they taste even better than they look! Come share one with me if you want!

[Perhaps if he was consciously aware of the donut shop his calibration self owned he may not be making this offer. Luckily for fellow donut lovers he doesn't so he's willing to share at the moment.]

[Clever and sneaky, buddy. So clever. So sneaky. Sokka squints. ]

He had a weird mask on? I'm pretty sure he slaughtered a town or something? I'm curious about what you did with him. If you let him go or...I don't know. I know you're pretty much a big time pacifist, so I'm guessing the former.

[That helps a bit more.] An orange mask and a purple skin tight suit? Named Monev? [That would be the one.]

Well, I didn't let him go. He was arrested. [There's a short pause as Vash wonders how much he should say about what happened next.] Not that he was there long. Someone else murdered him in the end. [Surprisingly, or perhaps not, Vash doesn't sound too happy about that. Despite his great desire to kill the man in the heat of the moment.]

That's him, yeah.

[Oh well, he kind of figured Vash wouldn't do it. It's good to know the guy got what was coming to him, though. ]

It's not like the world was a better place with someone like him in it, you know.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Did you know why he did it? [Because Vash found out later and wasn't sure if Sokka saw that part or not.]

Why he murdered a ton of people? Gosh, no! Is it a super duper good reason?

[Here we are with the good ship sarcasm! ]

Probably not, but when he was a child he was sold by his mother to a man. This man, who he was lead to believe was his father, locked him away in a room. Every day he was told he must train his body and skills to kill just one man. If he was able to kill this man then he would be free to live his life however he wished. Only then would this man would be proud of his "son".

For twenty years he lived alone in the dark doing nothing but training to kill a man he knew nothing about. The only contact he had was a man who told him what his only purpose in life was. Twenty years.

He wasn't given a choice that he was raised that way. He didn't know there was any other choice. All he knew was the day he had been forced to train for his whole life was finally here. That all he had to do was kill one person and then he wouldn't ever be put back in that box again.

If you lived for twenty years in isolation with only a single thought to drive you, do you think you would spend much time worrying about the surrounding damage your method might cause? Is it his fault that he was brainwashed because of the choice his mother made? I didn't get to spend much time with him, but I think if he had been given a second chance at a normal life he would have liked to try again. [Not that Vash is saying he really deserves a second chance. He still murdered a lot of people, but it was something to think about.]

[That reminds him a little of Zuko. Sure, Zuko had never been sold to anyone, but Ozai had made it clear the only way Zuko could earn his love was to be worthy of him. Blah blah honour. As such, he doesn't tackle this without any sympathy at all, but... ]

The fact he treated everyone around him like disposable canon fodder pretty much nills his second chance. He could have looked at the carnage he was causing at any moment, and stopped- or tried to lessen the amount of people caught in the crossfire. You can only excuse blind obedience so much. He either gets treated like a man who has an ability to change, or he gets treated like a dangerous brainwashed animal. He can't be both. If he had the ability to change, he would have took it already, not when he was defeated and had to.

Perhaps you're right. All I know is that he didn't kill anyone until he got to me and he only really had the one night to try to realise his whole life up until that point was a lie. He was still wrong to kill those people and he can't really be forgiven for that, but I still can't help except to wonder what he might have done with his life now that he knew the error of his ways.

Why did his father want you dead so bad anyway? What did you do to make someone so fixated on getting rid of you that they'd brainwash a kid into wanting you dead more than anything in the world?

[He doesn't know if the guy would have a better shot. It doesn't matter. He was dangerous, and needed to be taken out of the picture. But he won't argue it with Vash. ]
