It was kind of our hosts to give us gifts after keeping us on the Marsiva and making us share far, far too much with each other, but...

[The Russian pulls his lovely gift basket into view. In addition to the candies and fudge and pickled herring (he is grateful for all of these things, thank you space hosts), there are a few additional items that he is less amused by.]

Did anyone else find their choice in gifts, er... slightly insulting?

Although it was thoughtful of them, I admit, to provide a shirt [it says "I <3 bad boys," for the Russian speakers out there] for my girlfriend to wear once I grow her.

[Sarcasm. That was definitely sarcasm.]

[If Pavel isn't poking around his quarters on the Tourist, then he's going for a run on the Iskaulit. In either case, he is making no real effort to be sociable. It's not that he doesn't want to talk to people, it's just that there are a lot of things that he doesn't want to talk about. Everyone knows that the only sure way to avoid certain topics of conversation is to avoid talking entirely.

Any attempts on his part to keep quiet will fail miserably if he's approached. Being a person who likes other people is so hard sometimes.]

[It's a week or so after calibrations wrapped up before Natasha ventures out much, but there's only so long she can avoid her normal routines. And only so long she wants to, really.

Besides, she has people she should face.

It's not all about her.

Chekov is on that list, which is why she pushes down her discomfort and falls into step beside him as he runs.]

[Although he doesn't need to slow down for Natasha, it seems the polite thing to do. He doesn't stop entirely, though; then eye contact might have to happen. She saw some things that he would have rather kept to himself, and he saw a few things, too--dancers, killers, young girls destroying each other to survive. Nothing that surprising given what little he's puzzled out about Natasha, but still grim.]

Natasha, hello. [A smile.] How are you?

[That's a loaded question, not one she has an interest in answering honestly, though the answer she gives isn't a lie.]

Better than I have been. You?

That isn't nothing. [Since we're going for honesty.] I have been better, but also worse.

That seems like a very Russian answer. Philosophical. [And evasive. But she angles him a slight, tired smile.] Safe to saw you'll be better and worse in the future too.

Guess it's to be expected in a place where supposedly every move is being watched, though.

Maybe they're trying to hook you up? Or make you friends. Learning a language can be a good way to bond, in my experience. Though I bet most of it's tourist language, like "where is the bathroom?" or "I'd like a coffee," huh.

Huh? Sure, why not? If you'd like a language exchange, outside of English, I'm fluent in French, Italian, Japanese, and Swahili. I don't know as much Spanish as I should, either.

What is worth worrying about, I think, is our hosts.

I have never learned any of those languages allthough I have friends at home who speak Japanese and Swahili. How have you learned so many? Are you a linguist??

[ Guess what? You're special. She's been sticking to text even though voice or video might be easier on her just to keep her privacy. She's in her bunk, legs to her chest, baseball cap nowhere to be seen and dark hair, as ever, pulled into a ponytail. Leaning into her knees, her voice doesn't entirely fit her appearance -- it's just a touch softer than one might expect. ]

There, this is easier. [ Neutral sounding, a touch of a north-eastern American "accent". ] It's for work, mostly. French and Japanese were often spoken at home when I was younger, though I didn't really learn much Japanese until later in my life. And you, if you don't mind me asking?

Much easier, thank you. [She can enjoy his anything-but-neutral Eastern European accent that is much too distracting to type out. Zhank you.] A very interesting combination of languages, for an American especially.

No, I don't mind. I am from Russia and I have family in many different countries--the Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Latvia. Although my Romanian and Latvian leave much to be desired.

There's about a hundred reasons to worry about them, yeah. And at least a few of them new.

[ She wouldn't know that if he didn't tell her. Honestly, she's always impressed with anyone that can learn and use another language effectively. ]

You're quite welcome. [ She takes note of it, but doesn't seem surprised. ] I know a touch of those since it kind of correlates to Serbian, which is the common language in Edonia. We do a lot of work there these days with the civil war going on so honestly any of it would be helpful to me. My family's pretty small and more friends, I guess. They're in Canada these days.

[Keith was also working out today. It helped him focus to get out an simmering stress energy by taking it out in training, whether running, hitting the bag, or sparring with someone. Today, he'd chosen running. The Huntress actually had a fairly decent selection of gym equipment, but Keith hated treadmills, so he was using the halls on the Iskaulit. There was more room there than running around his own ship.

He spotted Chekov coming in the opposite direction, and slowed down to a stop.]
